WEEKEND PREVIEW 29th September 2000
Expect to see around four or five changes to the Queen's side to face Arbroath at Gayfield on Saturday afternoon, says Queen's boss John Connolly tonight. "With Steven Preen fracturing his wrist during the first half of last weekends match against Forfar and now out for around four weeks, Paddy Atkinson still doubtful after being carried off last weekend with a twist and Phil Nixon missing training on Thursday due to a viral infection, the majority of the changes will be enforced"

"With the reserves match being postponed we will take a large squad with us up to Arbroath for a match which will obviously have a bit of an extra edge for some of the players. Andy Aitken will play and Stewart Greacen, who was one of the very few who gained pass marks last Saturday, will undoubtedly feature in the defence." Reserve's Goal Machine Jarrod Suddick will not however feature tomorrow as he has picked up an injury, although Graeme Armstrong makes it into the large squad.

On the subject of the defeat by Forfar the boss was typically forthright, "The most disappointing thing about the defeat was the lack of fight shown by the players in front of their own fans, we've since sat down with them all and attempted to discover the reasons for at least eight of them underperforming on the day. It has been difficult to identify any particular problem, for instance Sandy Hodge who never really got going last week had trained in the same way and stuck to the same routine as he had prior to the Berwick game where he had a storming match, making some excellent runs and putting in some tremendous balls to the front two.

Sometimes in football you just can't pinpoint the reasons for such a difference in the level of performance. At best you can cope with a couple of underperforming players but as I said seven or eight just weren't there at all. However this fixture has an added edge for a lot of the players so we are sure that the performance level will be restored to the level shown against Berwick and Clydebank"

Arbroath as our hosts find themselves in a bit of a crisis at the moment, the man who took them from the bottom of the Scottish League and made them into promotion contenders in the Second Division, David Bakie, having resigned on a point of principle two weeks ago. As yet a new manager has not been appointed although all the usual suspects have been mentioned in the ever speculative press. How this will affect the team on the pitch is unclear, certainly some of their squad have been through it all before, particularly former Palmerston favourites George Rowe, Stevie Mallan and Jim Thomson.

With Queen's form presently much better away from home than at home let's hope that they will capitalise again on their travels and bring back a further three points to see us climb the league.
SNIPPETS 28th September 2000
There is no reserve game this weekend as Newton Stewart are playing in the South League Cup Final, we have added more fixtures to the Reserves section taking us right into November.

The Queen's Under 18 team will play their SFA Youth Cup second round tie versus Annan Athletic at Palmerston on Wednesday 4th October with a 7:30pm kick off. Don't expect to see quite as many goals as in the last round versus Newton Stewart where the lads recorded an emphatic 22-0 victory. A tight match is expected as Annan can boast one of the best youth set ups in the region.

Steve Preen looks set to miss a few matches after picking up an injury to his wrist during last weekends dismal defeat at the hands of Forfar.
GLOBE INN DOONHAMERS 26th September 2000
The recently formed Globe Inn, High Street, Dumfries QOS Doonhamers are running a bus to Stranraer on 4th November. Bookings - Davie Clark (Speedy) c/o Globe. The club's new badges are now on sale - see below and Sales and Wants page.

MAN OF THE MATCH 25th September 2000
As often happens the player least to blame in what was a poor performance takes the Man of the Match award. Goalkeeper David Mathieson who really had a reasonably quiet afternoon has been awarded the IFC Man of the Match award, in second place, by the smallest of margins was Warren Hawke who worked hard up front and had the best chance of the afternoon well saved, third place goes to Steven Pickering who worked away skilfully on the right.

The IFC Player of the Season league table has been updated to reflect these scores, see the MoM link, the net effect of a poor performance all round means that those not playing have shot up the league, Andy Aitken actually moves back into the lead after his colleagues managed to reduce their own averages through their poor performances on Saturday.

IN THE HOT SEAT 22nd September 2000
Our own John Connolly takes his place In the Hot Seat on the www.scottishfootball.com website this weekend. Read the lengthy interview by clicking on the link or find it in one of the tabloids this weekend.
WEEKEND PREVIEW 22nd September 2000
Thoughts of the midweek CIS Insurance Cup victory in early August against tomorrow's opponents Forfar Athletic, could not be further from manager John Connolly's mind as he makes his final preparations for the crucial clash at Palmerston on Saturday. As he tells us, "It will be a very different Forfar side that we will face tomorrow, they have signed four or five new players and, we believe, are in the process of signing another two before we meet".

On the injury front things look a little more hopeful than earlier in the week, "Steven Pickering's knee strain and Tony Nelson's slight pelvic knock looked to have cleared up pretty well at training last night. Mark Weir seems fully fit after suffering a badly swollen hand after coming off worse in a clash with a bee! whilst Phil Nixon despite some bruising trained very hard last night. As usual though we will have to wait until the morning to make the final selection after we see the response of the injuries to the training".

"The main aim this week is to build on our two excellent away performances at both Clydebank and last week at Berwick and produce that type of performance at Palmerston, after all it is our home game." The manager was also confident that the strike force is being provided with the ammunition it needs and all that is required is for them to convert one or two more of the chances they are making, last week John felt that it could easily have been six or seven whilst even against Stranraer he points out that with the chances Queen's made we could have had six, although he admits to Stranraer also having enough chances to score six. "At least two of their goals were down to sloppiness and that is not acceptable, what we need to do is to go to places like Berwick and come away with a clean sheet".

"This league is a very tight one with nothing much between any of the teams, we still have two to play and then we'll be in a position to better judge what we need to do, so far, though, there is nothing in it"

Our all time record versus the 'Loons' shows that we do like playing them with forty two wins to their twenty eight and twenty four draws.
PLAYER NEWS 22nd September 2000
A new face at Palmerston today is nineteen year old central defender Stewart Greacen. Stewart has been brought in to provide cover on a loan basis from Livingston. Previously Stewart was with Airdrie but was one of those released in June during the financial troubles at the New Broomfield. As a youngster he was part of the Ibrox youth set up and attended Carluke High School where both Mark Weir and Adam Moffat were also students.

Meanwhile a number of other players are coming under the microscope with the Queen's coaching staff having discussions with a number of potential signings after studying them in action. One who has caught the eye recently is Carlisle United forward Ian Stevens who has bagged a number of goals despite the poor start to the season that the Cumbrians have made.

Check back later tonight for a match preview and the latest team news.
INJURY WORRIES 20th September 2000
Following Tuesday night training the Queen's management find themselves with no fewer than four first team players with injury worries and Andy Aitken definitely missing through suspension.

Hopefully after tomorrow evenings session things will be a bit clearer so check back on Friday night for the latest team news.
PHIL'S FEELING FINE 18th September 2000
It looked initially on Saturday as if Phil Nixon had suffered a very serious injury, broken ribs at least as he was carried off the park at Berwick. The good news is, however, that the injury was nowhere near as bad as first thought and that Phil is fully recovered and will be ready for selection this coming weekend against Forfar. [Phil Nixon]
MAN OF THE MATCH 18th September 2000
The entire team scored highly this weekend which is particularly pleasing, the award of the IFC Man of the Match goes to Sandy Hodge who just pipped Dean Muir by the smallest of margins, in third place came Warren Hawke.

Have a look at the MoM section for the latest Player of the Season standings wher Phil Nixon re-takes the lead from Andy Aitken who suffered in the scoring through his sending off.

FUEL WORRIES? 15th September 2000
Warren Hawke has asked us this evening to let all travelling fans know that he hears via his Berwick contacts that there are no real problems with the supply of fuel over in the North East, so anyone travelling with enough just to get there should be able to fill up before the journey home.

Thanks to Warren for that info.
GAMES OFF 15th September 2000
If you were hopeful of taking in a Queen's game this weekend it will have to be at Berwick with the full team or at Livingston with the girls team, all other matches have been postponed because of the difficulty that travelling players may encounter obtaining fuel supplies. Please note that this includes the Reserves fixture versus Dalbeattie Star scheduled for Saturday.
MATCH PREVIEW 15th September 2000
Berwick Rangers and Queen's up until this Saturday shared the toughest start to the league campaign of any of the teams in the league, three away fixtures and two home, this week though it's Queen's who have to travel again, this time across the winding Borders roads for our second 'local' derby in as many weeks.

And a tough task it will be as Berwick, despite that unfavourable start to the season, lie third in the league and have lost only one of their opening games. In Queen's favour is that it will almost be a home fixture for many of the team who will make a relatively short journey up the A1 to Berwick.

Their will be changes to the starting line up from last weekend for sure, although details are under wraps until closer to kick off time. The squad is free of suspensions, all regular first team players are free from the flu bug and all are keen to re-start their challenge after last weekends hiccup.

Remember that if you have joined the Queen of the South Daily Draw you can keep up to date with the winners each day by opening the PRIZE DRAW link on the left hand navigation bar. If you're not already a member then open up the same page and follow the instructions for joining.

Both Any Martin and Phil Nixon were confined to their beds on Saturday night and Sunday with flu, both also missed out on Tuesday night training for the same reason.

Poor old Jarrod Suddick seems to suffer at the hands of the press more than most for misspelling his name, this week is no exception, maybe a few starts in the first team will be needed to get the correct spelling across.
MAN OF THE MATCH 11th September 2000
As TV evidence proves this evening the visitors second goal in the local derby on Saturday was considerably off side, scant consolation for boss John Connolly who had identified that goal and that decision as crucial moments in the match against Stranraer.

On a day when below par performances were rewarded by IFC members by low ratings Andy Aitken takes his first Man of the Match award of the season with a solid display in what was a less than solid defence.

Substitute and goalscorer Bryan Caldwell was rewarded with the second highest average with fellow substitute Sandy Hodge gaining enough of the vote to give him third overall.

WEEKEND PREVIEW 8th September 2000
This weekend sees Queen's back in action in what is only their second home league match of the season as they take on local rivals and ex-Queen's boss Billy McLaren's Stranraer.

Manager John Connolly tells us that there are unlikely to be any dramatic changes to the team this weekend with all players coming through the Thursday night training session unscathed. The only player that will not be able to feature is Jon Sunderland whose work commitments will keep him out of contention.

The good start to the season that Stranraer have enjoyed will no doubt make their journey to Palmerston a hopeful one, however it is a vastly different side that they will face than that which was so comprehensively defeated last season. And a side that is extremely confident about their potential to progress up the league in the next few weeks as the fixture list becomes a little more favourable.

The short break has been most welcome by the squad after such a tough opening few weeks, however they are all now keen to take to the field at Palmerston and get back to the business of climbing the league.

Another benefit of the break has been that John Connolly and his coaches have been able to take in some of the younger age group matches, "I've watched both the Under 15's and the Under 16's in the past few weeks since I've been in Dumfries and am delighted at the standard and potential shown within those sides. We have a very bright future with some of these lads and a number look certain to come through into the full team in time.", commented John.

The Under 18's and Reserves have also come under the bosses scrutiny recently, "A number of the lads in the reserve side are contenders for full team duty, John McCaig, Graeme Armstrong, Denis Boyle and Geoff Paterson are all still very young lads but already are pressing, whilst Jarrod Suddick and Kane Young are steadily building to full match fitness".

On the subject of Carlisle United's interest in Andy Aitken, John tells us that he has had discussions with Andy, who is fully aware of the situation and remains totally committed to continuing his career at Palmerston. Local press reports in Carlisle only served to strengthen Andy's commitment to Queen's.

The boss also took time out to send his and everyone at the clubs, best wishes to young striker Raymond McDonald. "Ray has just gone through an operation on his cruciate and mediate ligaments and looks likely, according to his surgeon, to be out of the game for some considerable time, at least the full season. He is a very good prospect and has youth on his side which hopefully will mean him making a full recovery from the injury in the shortest possible time. We all wish him the most speedy of recoveries and hope to see him back at Palmerston as soon as possible".

So back to Stranraer and our all time record shows that of our 77 encounters we have come out on top in 33 of those matches, drawn 21 and been defeated in only 23. At home we have conceded 51 goals to the light blues but have replied with 75 of our own strikes, lets see that total increase by a few tomorrow.
STILL COUNTING 7th September 2000
Queen's Under 18's impressive victory over luckless Newton Stewart in the SFA Youth Cup on Tuesday night has been recorded as a 23-0 victory, however the scorer of each goal has yet to be finalised. As soon as we have sorted it all out we'll publish it here, Queens will now face either Annan Athletic or Wigtown in the next round, these two teams meet on Sunday at Galabank.
NEW SECTION 6th September 2000
We have added a new section to the site tonight with the addition of Queen's 'ALL TIME' records, the data included and that we have posted tonight, covers the final league position and league table stats for every year that we have competed in the Scottish Leagues. Data to follow is the performance of the Doonhamers against every other league opponent that they have faced current or defunct.

Our thanks to Queen's fan David Main for providing this data, any other fans who have any information that they would like to share on the site then please email.

You will find the new section on the final left hand navigation bar just under the ARCHIVE button and labelled as ALL TIME.
CORRECTION 4th September 2000
The scorers for the reserves versus Threave Rovers in the 5-2 victory on Saturday were incorrectly published. The correct details were Graeme Armstrong - 2, Denis Boyle, Geoff Paterson and Vincent Parker.

Thanks to all those who pointed pointed out this error.
RESERVES VICTORIOUS 2nd September 2000
Queen's reserves emerged the victors in a 5-2 scoreline against Threave Rovers this afternoon at Palmerston. In what was a close fought game Queens went in at half time 2-0 up with Suddick and Armstrong the scorers, the former missing a penalty in that first half.

Queens increased their lead through Suddick again but then found themselves with only a single goal margin as the Castle Douglas side showed good fighting abilities, and with the score at 3-2 Tommy Muirhead pulled off a tremendous save to maintain the one goal margin.

A further two goals came to seal the match for the home side through Denis Boyle and trialist Vincent Parker.

The Queen's side was:-
McColm
Muir
Robison
McCaig
Moffat
D Patterson
G Paterson
Boyle
Young
Suddick
Armstrong
SUBSTITUTES
Gray
Weir
Foster
Parker

SNIPPETS 1st September 2000
Just because there is no first team match this weekend doesn't mean that everyone's on holiday, quite the opposite in fact as John Connolly and his coaching staff put the first team through a rigorous training session at the Tech College tomorrow morning and then in the afternoon the reserves face up to Threave Rovers reserves in the Southern Counties League match at Palmerston. Then on Sunday you can choose from either the Under 16's who take on Albion Rovers or the Ladies team who face Aberdeen.
PRESS RELEASE 31st August 2000
PLAYER ENQUIRY
Carlisle United FC made an enquiry about the availability of Queen of the South central defender Andy Aitken.

Queen of the South Manager John Connolly said he did not want to lose the player as he is an important member of the first team squad.

Carlisle United were asked to put an offer in writing if they wished to take things further and they decided not to do so.

Queen of the South FC now regard the matter as closed.
