Team News 30th April 2003
For the final home game against Ross County, Brian McColligan returns to the squad following suspension.

Doubtful however will be Derek Allan who has been suffering from a virus all week and John O'Neill who has missed out on the last three training sessions owing to work commitments.

Derek Allan obviously missed training again tonight and still has to sign his new contract while there has still been no further movement from the three players who have yet to re-sign.

Regarding Sean O'Connor, the manager stated, "Sean is under 24 and a Queen of the South player, he is more than likely to be retained next season but we are still having discussions with him."

Latest Re-signing News 28th April 2003
Tonight Paddy Atkinson signed a new contract to make him a Queen of the South player next season. Derek Allan who was also due to sign again missed training due to illness but all being well will put pen to paper on Wednesday.

Three other players, John O'Neill, Brian McLaughlin and Eric Paton have been offered contracts but have yet to sign, said John Connolly, "The reality is they have all been offered good contracts and the decision is now up to them, two of them have informed me they're talking to other clubs, I've no problem with that as they're both free agents but we wont be hanging about much longer for an answer."

Meanwhile Steve Bowey, (who along with Joe McAlpine), was booked against Clyde faces suspension. It is expected Bowser will miss the match against St.Johnstone a week on Saturday.

Man of the Match 28th April 2003
With yet another man of the match winning performance, this time versus Clyde at Broadwood, Steve Bowey almost guarantees that he will top the player of the season league table for the internet fan club this season, second and third places went to goalscorers Peter Weatherson and Jim Thomson respectively.

The full scoring can be found on the 'Latest Report' link and the updated player of the season league table can be found by following the 'Man of the Match' link.

Clyde 2-2 Queens - Reaction 26th April 2003
Broadwood is fast becoming a happy hunting ground for Queens skipper Jim Thomson for the big man again found the net today having already scored there back in October which takes his tally for the season now to three.

After the match John Connolly said, "A draw was no more than we deserved. Infact the way we played in the second half I'm actually disappointed we didn't win, we came from behind twice to share the points against a side that's lying second top of the table and who have lost only two league games at Broadwood all season. So it can't be bad.

We lost both goals due to defensive errors but on the other hand we scored two beauties, big Jim outjumped their defence to score the first and Peter Weatherson netted our second with a great header from a brilliant delivery. We've now eased above Ayr again on goal average and I'd dearly like to finish up there in fifth place a couple of weeks from now."

Latest Signing News 25th April 2003
Two more players, Derek Allan and Paddy Atkinson have now agreed terms for next season and will be signing new contracts on Monday night. Offers are still on the table to three other players and the club are looking for replies sooner rather than later.

Leaving the club, however, are 'keeper Jamie Campbell and defender Steve Renicks, whose contracts are not being renewed.
Team News 24th April 2003
John Connolly has one regular missing from the line-up for this Saturday's match at Broadwood against Clyde, midfielder Brian McColligan will have to sit the match out as he serves a one-match suspension received after collecting too many bookings this season. Other than McColligan the squad is at full-strength.
Third Cup this Year 23rd April 2003

Man of the Match 21st April 2003

Millionaire Mention 21st April 2003
All Queens fans who happened to be watching "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" on Saturday evening would no doubt be shouting out the answer to the £32,000 question - 'What of these Scotish Football Clubs are based in Dumfries - Is it - Airdrieonians, Clydebank, Queen of the South or St.Johnstone". Sadly the two celebrity contestants from "Shooting Stars" - Vic Reeves and George Dawes had no idea and had to flip to the next question.
Quens 0-1 Alloa - Reaction 19th April 2003
John Connolly confessed after the match, "I said beforehand it would be a hard one for Alloa were fighting for survival and had an awful lot more to play for than us, plus the fact that they always play it very tight at the back. As for ourselves it's sometimes difficult to lift players at this time of the season when all the hard work's been done. Right from the early stages I knew it was going to be a one-goal match, I thought the first team to score would win and that's how it turned out.

Two minutes midway through the second half completely changed the game, Derek Lyle hit a curling shot which came off the bar and they went up the field and scored, had Derek's shot found the net I think we would have won, but there you have it.

I took the chance to give two of our young lads a run out, Paul Burns and Willie Gibson, I was pleased with their performances and I'll certainly be giving them another chance before the end of the season.

We have now gone three games without scoring but we created chances in all of the games, however we haven't stuck the ball in the net and if you don't do that you don't win games - simple as that."

The John Connolly Story 19th April 2003
John Connolly began his association with Queen of the South in April 2000. It was a time of great crisis at the club and had it not been for Hamilton Accies being deducted 15 points for failing to fulfil a fixture, Queens would have been doomed for relegation to the Third Division.

However, this lifeline ensured the club survived and they have gone on since then to win the Second Division Championship and lift the Bells Challenge Cup.

"I wasn't due to take over the manager's job until June" John recalls "But I came up and watched the team a few times and realised right away that there were major changes urgently required. With the backing of the Chairman and the Board of Directors I set about making these changes. I brought in 'Scottie' as my assistant manager, Warren Pearson as my first team coach and appointed Kenny Crichton as physio. The coaching system was also updated and I signed quite a few players from the North-East of England (an area I knew very well) for it was obvious there were a lot of changes needed in the actual team itself. Some of those players made the grade, many of them didn't but two of them are still with us--Peter Weatherson and Paddy Atkinson.

"That first season was all about survival but we did pretty well and finished up in a respectable sixth place in the table. And last season--well we all know what happened then. We won the League Championship for the first time in 51 years and gained promotion to Division One.

"I then had to strengthen the squad even more for the challenge ahead, but being a relatively small club with limited resources, finances were at a premium. Again it was a case of survival and consolidation for the first season until we established ourselves for we were one of only three part time sides in that division. However we have done remarkably well to be mid-way in the table and the 'icing on the cake' so to speak, was winning the Challenge Cup final back in October".

Despite our successes, John is quick to emphasise it's not down to him alone and added "No way is it a one-man show. It's all to do with the hard work and the dedication shown by the Board of Directors, coaches, back-room staff and the players themselves. And let's not forget all those fans who support us through thick and thin.

"We have a tremendous spirit in the dressing room at present. That makes all the difference, for it only takes one 'bad apple' and that's when trouble starts. If that ever happens at Palmerston I'd make every effort to get the trouble maker out. One of the main reasons behind us winning those two trophies last year was down to the attitude and commitment of the players which has been great in practically every game we've played. We have a saying in the dressing room which we drum into the players before each match, 'Hard work can beat talent when talent doesn't work hard' and I think you'll all agree that this saying has a lot of truth in it".

John Connolly rounds the Birmingham City 'keeper before netting.
Born and raised in Barrhead, near Paisley, John played for Glasgow United as a youngster and one of his team mates at that time was none other than the legendary Kenny Dalglish. "I often tell the story" he reflects "That the two strikers in the side were Dalglish and Connolly. Kenny went on to become a 'superstar' and make his fortune while I'm still working away--there's the difference between the two of us. However I never thought I'd be playing alongside him again six years later for Scotland".

His first senior club was St Johnstone. John recalls "I signed when I was only 17 and the manager then was ex-Hibs star, Willie Ormond, who later went on to become Scotland
team manager. He was very knowledgeable in all aspects of football and I learned an awful lot from him. Willie always maintained that 'to get a good team you had to buy good players' and that's been my philosophy ever since.

"I was five years at Muirton Park when I heard Rangers had offered £40,000 for me. But then 'out of the blue' Everton offered double that figure so I motored straight down to Liverpool to sign the deal with their manager, Harry Catterick. It all happened so quickly that my wife didn't know until she heard the news on television". John had picked up two Under-23 caps while at St Johnstone but collected two more at Goodison.

John Connolly heads goalward in his Everton days in a match against Stoke City.

Then the big one came along when in June 1973 he was picked to play for the full Scotland team against Switzerland in Berne. "Even though we lost 1-0 it was a great experience for me to play in the same team as such stars as Danny McGrain, Billy Bremner, Derek Johnstone and my old Glasgow United team-mate, Kenny Dalglish. Later that year I was selected for the Scotland v Brazil match at Hampden. Brazil had just started preparing for the World Cup in Germany the following summer and all their big stars like Rivelino, Jairzinho and Paulo Cesar were playing. I was on the bench and itching to get on. But alas I didn't".

John suffered two leg breaks while at Everton but it didn't stop Sir Alf Ramsey coming in with a bid of £90,000 to take him to Birmingham City in 1976. Then it was on to Newcastle United in 1978 for £80,000 but two years later he was back north of the border to join Hibs and was re-united again with Willie Ormond.

Following a two year stint at Easter Road, and now 32, he headed south once more to play non-league football with Gateshead, then it was on to Blyth Spartans as player-manager. Whitley Bay was his next team before John returned to Scotland once more and was involved with coaching the

Under-23 and Youth squads at Ayr United and Motherwell. He was then appointed manager of Ashington and had to move house yet again to re-locate in the North-East. After that he became manager of Queens and the rest we have already chronicled.

John married his teenage sweetheart Anne in 1970--he was only 20 at the time and Anne 19. They have two sons, Graeme who now stays in Augusta, Georgia (home of the U.S. Masters) and Stuart, who works in Newcastle. Up until recently he was regional advertising manager for 'Golf Monthly' magazine, so it's no surprise that his main interest away from football is golf. "I've been very lucky on that score for my job has given me the opportunity to play many great courses in both Britain and the States" he admits.

John says Anne and himself are now quite settled in Dumfries and they both like the town. "Let's face it" he explains "When you've travelled the country and had more houses than players in a football team, you've got to put your roots down sometime. Not only that I've just become a member of the Dumfries and Galloway Golf Club, so I'll enjoy a few rounds when the football season finishes".

And what happens if an offer comes along to join a bigger club and become a full-time manager we asked. "Of course I'd have to consider it" he replied. "The Chairman has always known that and says he'd never stand in my way. But the offer would have to be a good one!".

Arbroath 0-0 Queens - Reaction 12th April 2003
Said John Connolly after the game, "I realise fans are never very happy with goal-less draws, but out there today the pitch was rock-hard and combined with a troublesome wind it was never going to be easy to play good football. I heard some mumping throughout the match but people don't seem to realise just how hard it is to play in conditions like that, but the reality is we did come away with a point and I'm told that was our first goal-less draw away from home all season, so I don't think there's too much to complain about.

In the first half we could well have scored five goals, we hit the post twice and their 'keeper pulled off some really great saves, while at the other end I don't think Colin Scott was really tested throughout the entire match.

I managed to get young Paul Burns on for a spell near the end and I hope to give some of the other youngsters the same opportunity in the final four matches.

We've had a lot of travelling these past few weeks with trips to Dingwall, Inverness and Arbroath, so it will be nice to have a home game next Saturday for a change, but Alloa are fighting for their lives and they have a good away records so it will not be easy."

Inverness CT 1-0 Queens - Match Reaction 5th April 2003
Speaking on the journey home John Connolly admitted he was disappointed at the result.

"It shows you just how we've come since the start of the campaign - playing a team away from home that's been challenging for the title all season yet feeling disappointed to lose by a single goal. I felt we matched them in every department of the game, the only difference being they scored the goal and in football that's all that matters.

The goal was a bad one and came at a bad time, just before the interval but in the entire match they had only three good scoring chances and all came from self inflicted errors by us, nevertheless we had chances of our own, Peter Weatherson had one early in the game and could have done better, whilst Steve Bowey had an opportunity to snatch a draw near the end, but that's football and Inverness is never an easy place to come and get a result.

Although St.Mirren closed the gap on us we're still only a point behind Ayr and it would be nice to finish above them. We've now five games left and three of these are against the bottom teams but let's not forget that both Alloa and Ross County are battling for survival so don't think it's going to be easy.

However being safe now gives us the chance to try out some of our young players ion those games and plan ahead for next season."

Team News 3rd April 2003
With the exception of the injured Andy Goram and Alan Gray, Queens have a full squad available for the long trip to meet Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Saturday.

In preparation for the match the Palmerston party will again leave on Friday and stay overnight at Aviemore.

Says John Connolly "It will certainly be a tough one for they will be on a 'high' following their cup win against Celtic in the Cup, but we drew 0-0 at Palmerston a few weeks ago and on our previous visit to Inverness they only beat us 5-3 and we played the entire second half with only nine men, infact at 4-3 up and five minutes to go they were actually shouting for the final whistle so we have nothing to fear.

We're now safe from relegation and with six games left I've told the lads to go out and enjoy their football and to collect as many points as possible, also we have the added incentive to overhaul Ayr and finish up in the top half of the table.

To date we have played thirty league games, we've actually won ten, lost ten and drawn ten so I think we've exceeded our expectations for the season.

On the contract front I've already spoken to a few players but still have quite a few to speak to, but it's early days yet so we'll just have to wait and see what transpires."

Bill Goldie
Cup Win 2nd April 2003
Queens won a place in the semi-final of the Southern Counties Challenge Cup with a comfortable 6-3 victory over Gretna at Palmerston tonight.

Hero of the hour was young Steve Archibald(right) who lived up to the reputation of his namesake of yesteryear by grabbing four goals.

Archibald put Queens ahead in the opening minute, but in twenty minutes Gretna equalised when David Ormiston netted. The visitors went ahead after thirty five minutes when Brian Fairbairn flashed a shot past Jamie Campbell which went in via the upright, but Queens hit back five minutes later with Archibald again the marksman.
Ten minutes into the second half Brian McLaughlin scored the best goal of the game when he swept in a shot from the corner of the penalty area and two minutes later Queens were awarded a penalty for hand ball in the box and Eric Paton made no mistake from the spot.

Young Archibald completed his hat-trick midway through the half when he headed home from a corner and he netted a fourth five minutes from time to make it 6-2.

Fairbairn scored a late consolation for the visitors in the dying minutes but Queens were worthy winners.

In the semi-final they are away to either Nithsdale Wanderers or Tarff Rovers.

Cup Kick-Off 31st March 2003
It is a 7.30pm kick-off on Wednesday evening as Queens face Rowan Alexanders Gretna side in the second round of the Southern Counties Challenge Cup at Palmerston.
Why Peter loves "Nellie the Elephant" 29th March 2003
Peter Weatherson openly admits he just loves it when he hears "Nellie the Elephant" blaring out from the P.A. system at Palmerston."It's great" he says with a big smile on his face "For it means I've just scored another goal.
"It was our physio, Kenny Crichton, who started it all off. He's a bit of a practical joker is Kenny and he said I looked a bit like John Merrick on whom the film 'Elephant Man' was based. The lads in the dressing room thought this was hilarious and they too nicknamed me 'Elephant Man'. The next thing I knew our P.A. man, 'Alex the Hat' had cottoned on and when I scored a goal at Palmerston he would play 'Nellie the Elephant' over the tannoy. But it's all good fun and I enjoy it".

Although only 22, Peter is in his third season with Queens and thoroughly enjoys it here. Apart from Andy Aitken and Jim Thomson, he is our longest serving player, having joined from Newcastle Blue Star in July, 2000. However, before that he did have a spell with Gretna Ponteland United.
That first season he took Palmerston by storm, knocking in goals from all angles. In only his 5th appearance he had the distinction of playing on the hallowed Hampden turf when he faced Queens Park. "It was marvellous experience for a 20-year-old" he recalled. "Apart from myself there were several other players from the North East and we all enjoyed the occasion" In October, in his 12th game, he notched a 'hat-trick' in a 4-2 victory over Stenhousemuir. "I remember it well" he grinned "Jarrod Suddick laid on all three goals for me--in fact I still have the match ball at home".

His goal-scoring soon attracted the attention of Premier League sides from both sides of the Border (including his beloved Newcastle) but unfortunately for Peter no serious offer materialised. "Were you aware of the scouts in the stand watching you and did it affect you in any way" we asked. "Not really" he replied. "But I must admit it was on my mind at times".

Peter scored 20 goals in 37 games in that first season and scooped the pool at the Doonhamer Travel Club's annual presentations winning all three major awards--'Player of the Year', 'Young Player of the Year' and 'Away Day Player of the Year'. "Ever since I arrived at Palmerston the fans have been great and have given me tremendous encouragement" he confessed. "To me they're just brilliant, particularly all those who travel to the away games at places like Peterhead and Ross County. That's dedication for you"

To date he has netted 44 times for Queens and his most memorable strike was the second of his two goals in the recent match at Alloa. This goal incidentally won the 'Scotsport Goal of the Month' award for January. Another he vividly remembers was at Hampden against Queens Park. "We were 1-0 down but I rammed home a cracker and we went on to win the match 2-1".

And his most memorable games? "Three immediately spring to mind-- the Challenge Cup final at Broadwood; the match up at Forfar when we clinched the Championship and, of course, the following Saturday at Palmerston when we were presented with the trophy".

And how do you compare first division football to last season? "The pace is a lot quicker; the quality of football is much better and you get punished more for any mistakes" he confessed. And what about playing in the deeper role you've been allocated of late. "Obviously I prefer being an out-and-out striker, but we've such an accomplished squad now I'm just glad to get a game. I'd play in goal if I was asked" he joked.

Born and bred on Tyneside, Peter has supported Newcastle United since childhood. "It runs in the family" he explains. "My father and grandfather attended all their games and I used to hear them argue and compare all the great players from the past like Jackie Milburn, Bobby Mitchell, Peter Withe and Malcolm Macdonald. So it must be in the blood so to speak".

His own boyhood stars were Peter Beardsley and the irrepressible 'Gazza', both of whom he describes as 'Magpie Heroes'. In more recent times it was the legend himself, Alan Shearer that Peter hero worshipped. Last season it was strongly rumoured that he would be turning out for Newcastle against Queens in a pre-season friendly match. "But he wasn't there and he may regret losing out on his one and only chance to play against Peter Weatherson" he laughed.

"I used to work in a flooring factory which was quite close to St James Park. I've actually played at the 'shrine of football' once" he said with pride in his voice. "I was only 14 and turned out for my school team, Kenton Comprehensive. Sadly, we lost 2-0, but it was an exciting day for me".

At the beginning of this season Peter re-located to Dumfries but it didn't quite work out as planned, so he has now moved back to Newcastle. "I had hoped to get in a lot of extra training by using the facilities available at Palmerston and also improve my fitness at the Barracuda Leisure Club. However, being more-or less on my own it wasn't so easy" he explained. "I really like Dumfries, but being a small town and me playing for Queens I felt I was always being 'watched'. I'd to be very careful what I said and what I did--it was like living in a goldfish bowl at times".

"Did you have any trouble with the usual Scotland/England issue when in Dumfries" we questioned." "No, not at all" he confessed "But I think the Scots and the Geordies have always got along famously. If I'm ever going to a nightclub with a bad reputation I always take my 'minder' Kenny Crichton with me. Let's face it, yobs would just take one look at Kenny and run a mile" said Peter, chuckling to himself.

Away from football he relaxes by playing snooker and golf, working out at the gym and we believe he's a very polished performer at karaoke.

Peter openly admits he owes an awful lot to the 'gaffer', John Connolly and also 'Scottie' (the assistant manager); Warren Pearson (First team coach) and physio, Kenny Crichton. "They gave me a chance to prove myself" he says "And have always watched over me and guided me in the right direction".

As for characters in the game, he puts Andy Goram right up there at the top of the list and describes him as a 'great guy'. "He's a laugh-a-minute--great fun when out socially; great with the young players and I feel he's been a great asset to the club".

And what about Peter's hopes for the future. "I'd love to go full-time and, with no disrespect to Queen of the South, play at the highest level possible. I'm only 22 and all I want to do at present is play professional football" he concluded.

This concludes our series of Player Chat for this season however, next month we feature a Manager Chat as John Connolly relates his story.
