Another new signing | 26th June 2008 |
Queens today signed former Gretna defender Craig Barr. The 21-year-old is equally at home in the right-back role or in central defence and put pen to paper on a two year contract at Palmerston this afternoon.
Craig hails from Edinburgh but moved south as a 16-year-old to join Blackburn Rovers and spent almost three years with the Lancashire club. He then signed for Gretna and was a regular with the Raydale side playing right up to their final game last season. Said Craig just after signing, "I'm really looking forward to the move. Queens are coming off the back of a fantastic season and I'm excited at the prospect of playing for the Scottish Cup finalists. I know big Neilly MacFarlane, Jamie McQuilken and 'Tosher' from my time at Gretna and also have a lot of respect for ex-Queens player, big Derek Townsley, who I also know well". Craig can only recall playing once against Queens during his two year spell at Raydale but admits, "It's a game I'd rather forget! Queens beat us 3-0 at home that afternoon and that was to be the start of our downfall". This now takes our tally of signed players to the 15 mark and training commences in earnest at Glasgow Green on Monday. The following week the squad heads for St Andrews for four days before their first pre-season friendly against Annan Athletic at Galabank on the Saturday. Bill Goldie |
Andy's Testimonial arrangements | 25th June 2008 |
It may be Andy Aitken's Testimonial Year but nothing seems to be running smooth for the popular Queen of the South defender. Owing to the club's participation in firstly the Scottish Cup semi-final, followed by the Cup Final itself, two Testimonial Dinners have already had to be cancelled but a date in October has been provisionally pencilled in--so here's hoping it will be third time lucky.
The latest headache for the 'Annan Lad's' organising committee is the Am-Am golf tournament which was arranged for Sunday, 31st August. With Queens now playing in the UEFA Cup their scheduled league fixture with Dundee at Palmerston has been moved to that same day and the new date for the golf Am-Am at the Dumfries and Galloway club is now Sunday, 21st September. Said Andy himself, "We've been the victims of our own success and my organising committee could never have envisaged so many problems arising--but we're getting there". The next event on the calendar is a football match at Galabank between 'Andy's All-Stars' and Annan Athletic themselves. Many former Queens' favourites from the late 1990's and early 2000's will be taking part and the game will take place on Friday, 11th July, with a 7.30 kick-off. Admission will be £7.00 with £3.00 for juveniles. This is not to be confused with the game taking place the following day between Queen of the South and Annan Athletic which is a pre-season friendly. It is also hoped that a special Testimonial Match for Andy can be arranged against a top English side in the not too distant future. Bill Goldie |

Ryan moving on! | 20th June 2008 |
One player who won't be with us at Palmerston this coming season is Ryan McCann who has decided to move on. Said a disappointed Gordon Chisholm this morning, "We made Ryan a very good offer as we were keen to keep him and did everything in our power to do so. But he leaves with our respect and good wishes for the future--after all he's done for us in such a relatively short space of time. He had also built up a special relationship with the fans who will a be sad to see him go as well.
"Perhaps he feels the 'grass could be greener' elsewhere but players leaving is all 'part and parcel' of the game in modern day football--especially now with 'freedom of contract'. Unfortunately there was nothing else we could do!" Ryan himself was also sorry to leave but admitted, "I've really enjoyed my spell at Palmerston and it's a time in my career I'll never forget. Everyone was so encouraging and the Queens' fans were tremendous". And despite being linked with Morecambe he insists, "I've not signed for any club yet--my options are still open as I've got my family to consider". In a four month spell Ryan played 20 games for Queens and although he scored only once, it was from 84 yards, and will go down in the history books. "I'll always remember those three cup-ties against Dundee, Aberdeen and Rangers and I've not forgotten those boots from that Dundee match which I promised to donate for auction with the proceeds to go to the 'Molly's Wish' fund. In fact, I'm hoping to pop down to Dumfries on Monday, all being well, to hand them over personally. "No matter where I end up the Queens' result will be one of the first I'll be looking for on a Saturday and I sincerely wish Queen of the South all the best next season and I hope they do well in Europe as well". Travel arrangements | 17th June 2008 |
Queen of the South's entrance into the 2nd Qualifying Round of the UEFA Cup next season represents a great opportunity for the club, but also for many of our supporters to experience competitive football abroad for the first time.
As a stalwart of European excursions with the Scotland team, I understand the intricacies required in such a trip, and want to ensure that the experience is an unforgettable one for our fans. I realise there will be a lot of pressure on the support - with the draw being made on the 1st August and the legs played a few weeks after, money and time away from work/family commitments will be crucial in most people's decision to travel. The club have partnered with TMG, a market leader with many years of experience in catering travel packages for clubs from Manchester United to Dunfermline Athletic. It is the club's desire to offer a package that will allow for safe and reliable passage at as reasonable a price as possible to ensure this. In this regard, we are delighted to be working with TMG, who have a long and proven track record in helping football fans travel efficiently and safely across the globe. Working with an organisation of TMG's size ensures we can make travel arrangements as close as possible to the draw being made in Nyon - which with the potentially short period between the draw and first leg, will be of great benefit to the club and supporters alike. Through TMG, Queen of the South will be making travel arrangements available (that will include accommodation and travel) directly to fans wishing to support the club in Europe. As the details of our European opponent will be unknown until the 1st August, we can't offer any kind of package yet, as details regarding the availability of tickets, flights and accommodation are unknown. We have however set up an official UEFA cup travel page (http://www.tmgsport.com/qos/index.html) to which I would kindly ask all supporters with an interest in travelling to register. Providing us with the small amount of information required at the moment can be extremely helpful to us catering the arrangements to your needs and keeping you up to date with all the latest arrangements. 'Chis' is back | 17th June 2008 |
Gordon Chisholm returned from holiday in Cyprus on Sunday and was glad to hear that our opening league fixture was a home one against Airdrie United. "But they'll be no pushover" the manager warned. "When you look at the league they'll not be many easy games.
"However, the league is our 'bread and butter' and I want to get points on the board early this time around. I don't want a repeat of last season but, having said that, we won't kick-off with five players suspended. Nevertheless, we won't be taking anything for granted. "It's now time to put the glamour of the cup final behind us, roll up our sleeves, work hard and look to the future. We commence training again on the 30th June--so that's only five weeks respite we've had". As far as new players are concerned the manager says, "I'm looking and talking. We've 14 already signed up and I'll be speaking to Ryan McCann this week so I'm hoping a satisfactory agreement can be concluded by the week-end. I think we were extremely fortunate to get Stewart Kean as there were several clubs interested in him and I have high hopes for the young Stranraer lad, Gerry McLauchlan as well". Gerry is signed through to 31st May, 2010, and the 19-year-old is delighted to have the opportunity of playing First Division football. But he admits, "I missed Queens' two biggest matches last season--the final and semi-final of the Scottish Cup. I was on my way north to play for Stranraer at Elgin on the day of the Aberdeen match but listened to it on the radio on the way up. On the day of the final against Rangers I was sitting at an airport waiting to fly out on holiday but managed to see most of the game in the TV Lounge prior to take-off". Bill Goldie |

Sandwiched between those fixtures will be a long trip north to take on Ross County on Saturday, 23rd August. Queen of the South win with CIC- Taken from You First 18. Written by John Hughes | 12th June 2008 |
Seventeen footy fans in Dumfries and Galloway supported by CIC, recently netted free tickets for the Queen of the South FA Cup Final in Glasgow! The diehard fans who access CIC's Senior Care and Supported Living services and the staff that support them, were taken by CIC buses to watch the Scottish Division 1team compete against UEFA Cup finalists Rangers. |
Queen of the South FC donated the tickets to ensure that all their fans in the Dumfries and Galloway community got the chance to see them play at Hampden Park on 24 May. Local firm Ashleigh Construction paid the costs of the transport to the Glasgow stadium.
Although their team didn't bring the cup home, the fans all reported that they had a momentous day out and shouted themselves hoarse! Helen Rose manager of Castle Douglas senior care home Carlingwark said "Our residents were buzzing with excitement!" She added, "We have many residents who have supported Queen of the South all of their life, so it was a great opportunity for them to see them play live again." |
Charlotte Kirby from Carlingwark said, "At 86 it was one of the best days I have ever had. When the crowd cheered it felt like they were going to take the roof off!" Fellow Carlingwark resident Bill Anderson added, "It was a great day but it would have been better if we had won. Luckily we had great weather and it was lovely for me to go back to Glasgow where I was born. My father used to take me to matches when I was a wee boy." Helen said: "We had CIC busses coming from Stranraer, Newton Stewart, Castle Douglas, Dalbeattie and Dumfries decorated with Queen of the South flags, banners, posters and scarves."
|
Playing against a team that had been in the running for four major trophies, Queens came back from a two goal deficit to score a double in the first 15 minutes of the game. However, their heroics ended when Scotland international Kris Boyd scored his second goal of the match to seal a 3-2 victory for Rangers. Jimmy Paul from Charnwood Lodge, one of the many lifelong fans attending the game said, "I am extremely proud of my team. We have done fantastically well as Queens were a First Division team up against a Premier League team."
|
James Rutherford, Business Development Manager of Queen of The South said; "The club was delighted to be offering free seats at Hampden to our fans across the region who might otherwise have been unable to attend. Being a community club, we recognise that we have many older or disabled fans in Dumfries and Galloway, and their support is very important to us. He added, "I hope everyone who travelled up with CIC had a great day, and even though Queens didn't win the cup, they played like champions and made history!"
|
Alex Steel, Managing Director of Ashleigh Construction said "We have been involved with CIC for five years, providing construction support for a number of their services in the Dumfries area. We have a great working relationship with the charity and felt that we should support a great cause". He added, "We wanted to give back to our local community and are delighted to have been able to provide funding for the transport to the game for people who otherwise would not have been able to attend this once in a lifetime match."

Another friendly arranged | 3rd June 2008 |
Queens today arranged another pre-season friendly with a match against Annan Athletic at Galabank on Saturday, 12th July. Kick-off is at 1.30pm. This is the Saturday before our other friendy fixture against Owen Coyle's Burnley at Palmerston on 19th July. However, owing to our participation in the UEFA Cup, Queens will not be taking part in the annual Brewer's Cup tournament at Annan this year.
On the subject of the UEFA Cup it has been announced that the venue for our home games will be the Excelsior Stadium at Airdrie. We believe that Manchester City is one of a few big names who will enter the competition before us owing to the Fair Play awards. It now beggars belief to think that the third best supported club in the Premiership need a victory if they are to play Queen of the South. Bill Goldie |
