Correction 31st January 2007
A slight correction to our earlier news regarding the Steve Tosh signing, Steve has actually signed up as a Queen of the South player until the Summer of 2009 and not 2008 as we earlier reported.

Cup build-up 3 - Manager calls for vocal support 31st January 2007
Ian McCall asked for maximum vocal support for Saturday's crucial cup-tie and stressed, "The more noise from our fans the better! And, having been a player myself I know full well how much it can help. In our last two home games we've played well apart from those last crazy few minutes against Partick Thistle. If we play like we did for the first 80 minutes last Saturday I'm confident we'll win, but if we defend as we did in those last six minutes we'll not. I didn't lay into the players too much at the final whistle for they knew themselves that they had almost 'blown it'.

"To me the Scottish Cup has always been the premier cup competition and it's the one I always looked forward to most as a fan, a player and now a manager. I've been to many exciting cup matches featuring Queens with my father in days gone by, but there's two I'll always remember.

"The first was that epic cup replay at Palmerston in 1976 when we beat Ayr United 5-4 in extra-time. I still vividly recall Peter Dickson collecting the ball on the Stand side with only five minutes left and lopping it over keeper Sproat for the winner. The whole of Palmerston went ballistic--including myself. Three times we were behind in that game but fought back magnificently. That's the kind of spirit I'm after from our players come Saturday.

"The following year we made it to the quarter-finals again but lost 5-1 to Celtic at Parkhead. I was at that one as well and we were much better than the scoreline suggests as two of their goals came from the penalty spot".

But back to this Saturday and the manager says "It's 30 years since we last made it to the last eight and this is possibly the best chance we've had for years. It's also important that we win at the first attempt as the last thing we want is a replay up at Central Park in midweek. However we must show them the upmost respect as they drew with Morton on Saturday and that would have come as a big confidence booster for them.

"So, I can only ask our fans once again--give us your all and get Palmerston buzzing".

Apart from Stevie Murray, who is 'cup-tied', all our new signings are available and should feature at some stage. Willie Gibson, of course, is also free to play as well.

Tomorrow night on Cup Build-up we feature Steve Tosh.

'Stat's life 31st January 2007
Saturday will be our fourth meeting with Cowdenbeath in the Scottish Cup--the previous three all being at Palmerston. We first came face-to-face in the competition in 1931 when they beat us 3-2 and went on to reach the quarter finals that year before losing 1-0 to Motherwell. But that was to be Cowden's one and only appearance in the last eight. That match at Palmerston attracted a crowd of 5933 with gate drawings of £234--youngsters would spend more than that on a weekend 'clubbing' nowadays!

Only three years later we met the Central Park men again but this time we got revenge by winning 3-0. 1956 was our most recent clash and a 3-1 victory heralded the start of a good cup run which should have been even better. After drawing 2-2 with Kilmarnock at Rugby Park we then beat them 2-0 at home with Bobby Black and big Jim Patterson scoring.

Next up were Clyde at Palmerston. The Shawfield side were lying second bottom of the table at the time and Queens were tipped as strong favourites to make it to the semi- finals for only the second time in the club's history. But football can be so unpredictable and despite leading 2-0 early on (Jimmy McGill and Patterson scoring) the visitors staged an amazing comeback to triumph 4-2 to shatter our dream.

A little detail 30th January 2007
One little detail we left out earlier is that Steve Tosh has signed up as a Queen of the South player until the Summer of 2008.

A Queens' player at last! 30th January 2007
Stevie Tosh signed for Queens today and will attend an official Press Conference at Palmerston tomorrow. Speaking to the 'Website' this evening our new signing said,

"I love it here in Dumfries and my partner, Stefanie loves it here too. Our kids are well settled at Noblehill School as well. Dumfries is my home now, we've got a lot of good friends and neighbours here and we're all very happy. I'm a Queens' player now and I'll do all that I can to help my 'local team'.

"Over the last few weeks I've watched Queens a few times and have been most impressed by their performances--especially at home. They may be bottom of the league at present but there's still a long way to go to the end of the season and I'm confident we can stay up in the First Division. They were a lot worse off this time last season and survived and I think we'll do it again.

"I've no divine right to walk straight into the team and I know I'll have to play for my place the same as everyone else. In recent weeks the manager has brought in several quality player which has certainly strengthened the squad. I know a lot of the Queens' players very well--Jamie McQuilken and Andy Aitken were team-mates at Gretna and everybody in football knows big Jim Thomson. I worked under Ian McCall and Gordon Chisholm at Falkirk, so they're no strangers either.

"Now it's all settled I'm really looking forward to playing again".

On the signing Ian McCall said tonight, "It's been a long, long chase but we've got him at last. Obviously he had offers from other clubs but he chose Queen of the South. Stevie loves living in Dumfries which is a big bonus and I'm delighted to have him on board as he is a quality player and the best midfielder in our division".

Willie's happy now 30th January 2007
In the aftermath of yesterday's negotiations, Willie Gibson was a happy young man this morning when he spoke to the 'Website'. Said the 'wing wizard', "Talks had been dragging on all through January and it was getting rather frustrating. So I'm delighted that a settlement's been reached at long last.

"The deal suits both myself and Queen of the South although it leaves Kilmarnock a couple of players down with Stevie Murray and Jamie Adams already at Palmerston. But Killie have quite a big squad so I'm sure Jim Jeffries will cope with that".

Added Willie, "The arrangement gives me the chance to up my training as well and prepare for full-time football. On Mondays and Tuesdays Killie and Queens share the same training facilities just north of Glasgow so I'll train Monday and Tuesday mornings with Killie and join Queens for an extra spell on the Tuesday afternoon. Then, on Thursday and Friday I'll train in Dumfries with Queens as usual. You could say I'm getting the best of both worlds! I know most of the Kilmarnock lads pretty well now after my two week training stint with them last month and I'm looking forward to seeing them all again".

By the time he leaves Palmerston, Willie will probably have chalked up over 80 first team games for Queens and recalls,"I'll always remember my debut against Queens Park when I was only 16. I came on as a sub, played well, and was named 'Man of the Match'. Another match I'll never forget was a cup-tie up at Montrose two years ago when I scored my one and only first team goal. But I'd really like to leave on a 'high'. I'd like to see Queens off the bottom of the league and get to the quarter finals of the Scottish Cup--even the semi-finals if possible--and score another goal or two into the bargain. So, I'll be doing my best to achieve that before I say farewell".

Cup clash 30th January 2007
The very first meeting of the Doonhamers and the Blue Brazil was actually in the Scottish Cup when the Fifers beat us at Palmerston in 1931. The other two games in the Cup v. Cowden both went Queens way:
1934 - 3-0
1956 - 3-1

Build up to the Cup - 2 30th January 2007
Cowdenbeath boss, Brian Welsh, is hoping that history might just repeat itself when his side travel to Palmerston for the cup-tie on Saturday. The manager recalls, "I believe we've only made it once to the Scottish Cup quarter finals in the club's 125 year history. That was 76 years ago--away back in 1931! We actually beat Queen of the South at Palmerston en-route to the last eight but were then knocked out 1-0 by Motherwell".
Nevertheless, Brian admits, "This is a massive game for us! We're only a small club who look for a good cup run to provide much needed financial income. Obviously our main priority this season is to stay in Division Two, but success in the cup is always a welcome bonus and gives our fans something to cheer. However, Queens have been in the First Division now for five seasons and that is a remarkable achievement for a part-time club. They'll start heavy favourites, especially having the home advantage, but there's always some surprises in the Scottish Cup and I'm hoping we can spring one of them".

Welsh in action in that Cup final
To get to this stage Cowdenbeath beat Edinburgh University 5-1 then disposed of Brechin City at Glebe Park following a 1-1 draw at home. Added Brian, "I've been sent a couple of reports on Queens and I had someone down on Saturday to watch them against Partick Thistle. What a match that must have been! Normally I would have been at Palmerston myself for their replay with Dundee but as we were playing at Brechin that same night I couldn't manage. We did meet Queens only recently in a Reserve cup tie and beat them in a penalty 'shot-out'. I'd gladly settle for a draw on Saturday and a replay at Central Park--even if it did go to another 'shoot-out' scenario".

In an illustrous playing career Brian spent 11 years with Dundee United and was a member of their famous side who beat Rangers in the 1994 Scottish Cup final--the one and only time United ever lifted the famous trophy. He then moved to Hibs and during his time at Easter Road two of his team mates were a young Eric Paton and Jamie McQuilken.
A severe achilles tendon injury saw him sidelined for two years but he came back to turn out briefly with both Stenhousemuir and Clydebank prior to ending his playing career in Iceland with Valur. He then joined the coaching staff at Cowdenbeath and after the resignation of Mixu Paatelainen in November, was appointed manager at Central Park.

Tomorrow on 'Cup Build-up' our own manager, Ian McCall is featured.

From the Manager 29th January 2007
The Cowdenbeath match is a fantastic cup-tie to look forward to and gives us a good chance to progress to the quarter finals of the Scottish Cup for the first time since 1977. It was against Celtic at Parkhead and I remember well attending it with my father. We lost 5-1 but I recall Peter Dickson scoring our only goal and big Chris Balderstone being 'Man of the Match'.

However, we must also remember that Cowdenbeath will look at it as an equally good chance to get to the quarter finals as well, so we must give our opponents every respect.

We have a number of injury problems to contend with! Sean O'Connor, who has been excellent recently, had to come off with a thigh strain on Saturday while Jamie McQuilken had a slight problem with his groin and should really have come off as well. Neil Scally, who was actually sick at half time on Saturday is ill. But the good news is that they all have a full week to recover.

I was extremely pleased with the debuts of all the new boys and I only took young Jamie Adams off at half time because I though he might tire and put in a mistimed challenge that may have led to a second yellow card and a sending off.

With a buzzing Palmerston on Saturday I feel we have a great chance!

Willie signs for Killie 29th January 2007
Willie Gibson put pen to paper this morning to become a Kilmarnock player at long last. His contract is for three and a half years. But that's not the last we'll see of Willie in the Blue of Queens for, after signing, he'll return to us on an emergency loan for the month of February which will allow him to play in both league and cup matches. Said Ian McCall, "The deal in total is worth between £60,000 and £70,000 to Queen of the South and also involves Stevie Murray and Jamie Adams coming to Palmerston on loan until the end of the season, with Kilmarnock paying their full wages. An additional bonus may also be Andrew Barrowman returning to sign until the end of the season as well". Added the manager, "I'm glad it's all 'done and dusted' as it's been dragging on for a while now and I'm sure all Queens fans will be pleased he'll be with us for another month. If it's down to natural ability Willie will be playing week in week out in the Premier League, but it's all down to him now and I wish the lad luck".

Winner of the man of the match voting from the win over Thistle on Saturday was Stevie Murray, second place went to Stephen Dobbie with Sean O'Connor in third.

Build up to the Cup 29th January 2007
Today we commence a five day build up for Saturday's cup-tie against Cowdenbeath and kick-off with an interview with Neil Scally who netted that all-important last penalty to give us a 4-2 win in the 'shoot-out' against Dundee.
But Neil wasn't at all nervous when he commenced the long walk from the centre circle to the penalty area and insisted, "I said to myself 'stay calm', took a quick glance at the keeper, ran up, gave a wee shimmy and slotted it into 'Ludo's' left-hand corner. I'm quite used to taking penalties", he added. "I took them at Falkirk and at Ayr and I haven't missed one yet. 'Burnsy', Willie Gibson and Jim Thomson had all scored--big Jim actually volunteered to take one, so after I found the back of the net we all made a 'bee-line' for Barry John who had pulled off two great saves. Even if I had missed I felt sure that BJ would have saved the last one the way he was playing. His stop from wee Del Lyle was brilliant, as Del doesn't miss many. Under the circumstances I felt BJ gave a tremendous performance".
Neil, who has already collected four 'Man of the Match' awards in the league this season stressed, "It was a good all-round team performance, and, had there been one 'up for grabs' that night, any one of about four players could have won it. Stephen Dobbie, who scored two goals; big Sean who ran his heart out; Willie Gibson, for his penetrating runs and, of course, BJ himself.

"But, to be honest, we shouldn't have needed a penalty 'shoot-out', in fact we shouldn't have needed extra time. Three times we were ahead and lost bad goals, we should have had the match all closed up within the 90 minutes. It took me back to the Kilmarnock game in the CIS Cup back in August!. Again we could have had in won in normal time but it went to extra time and Steven Naismith nipped in to score the winner".

Scally slots home the winning penalty
Neil is now looking forward to Cowdenbeath in the next round but warned, "We can't afford to underestimate them and we mustn't be complacent. They'll be looking at our league table and where we are, and will fancy their chances. We have a quarter final place there for the taking and for the sake of the fans, who have been brilliant; the club itself and the town of Dumfries we must win through".

Tomorrow in 'Cup Buildup' we feature Cowdenbeath manager, Brian Welsh

Match Reaction 27th January 2007
Queens always do it the hard way! Three nil up at half time and four nil after 47 minutes they took their foot off the pedal and Thistle hit three goals in the last six minutes to make it a nerve racking finale for all Queens fans.

Said a relieved Ian McCall at the final whistle, "What a crazy, crazy game! I was almost physically sick at the trackside when their third goal went in and I bet a lot of our fans felt the same. We were coasting at 4-0 up and had it not been for two great saves from their 'keeper it would have been 6-0. But at the end it might well have been 4-4. Our new signings Stevie Murray and Jamie Adams did well and I only took Jamie off at half time as we were 3-0 up and he was sitting on a yellow card. Our new 'keeper Jamie MacDonald also had a sound debut. However we got the win and we pulled two points back on Ross County and that's heartening.

Sponsors Man of the Match Stevie Murray commented, "The tempo was superb early on and we played a lot of good stuff and created a lot of good chances. At 4-0 up I felt the game was well and truly won but when they netted that third goal I had visions of a draw. Queens are a fine club and there's a lot of good experienced players here at Palmerston. I haven't had a start in the SPL this season and I'm suffering from a lack of games. I'm in the 'shop window' here until the end of the season and then we'll see how it goes as I've still six months of my Killie contract left".

New 'keeper Jamie MacDonald admitted he was glad to hear the final whistle. Said the Hearts youngster, "For the first eighty minutes I hadn't much to do apart from the basics, the three goals hit us like a thunderbolt although I felt the penalty decision was a soft one. With ten minutes to go I looked at the clock and thought I'd get a clean sheet on my home debut but a win is a win and I enjoyed that."

Dick Campbell confessed, "At the moment we're giving goals away so softly and it's all down to quality. But to be honest three of Queens goals were 'top drawer' and the lad O'Connor caused us all sorts of bother".

Crowd today - 2011, visiting fans - 426.

Finally just for clarification both Jamie Adams and Jamie MacDonald are available for the cup game next Saturday but Stevie Murray is cup tied after having featured as a substitute for Kilmarnock in their shock defeat at Morton.

Signing Surge 27th January 2007
Two Kilmarnock players have this morning joined Queens on loan until the end of the season and both have been added to the squad for this afternoon's game versus Partick Thistle. Stevie Murray is a 24 year old winger and former Scotland Under 21 player whilst Jamie Adams is a 19 year old versatile full-back, both have come through the Kilmarnock youth system.

The loan moves are tied in with a deal that could see Willie Gibson move to Kilmarnock with both Ian McCall and Willie going up to Rugby Park on Monday to try and conclude a deal.

The manager is also hopeful of landing two more players next week before the transfer window closes, his targets being Andrew Barrowman and Stevie Tosh.

Jamie's impressed 26th January 2007
Our new keeper, Jamie MacDonald, had his first view of Palmerston Park this morning and, although the protective covers were down, he commented, "It's a nice compact stadium and it appears to be a good set-up down here" before rushing off to the KGV to join his new team mates for a training stint.

Jamie has never played at Palmerston and admitted that it's the first time he's even been in Dumfries, before asking what our average crowds were. "I'm really looking forward to playing in the First Division" said the 20-year-old, who is a member of the Scotland Under-21 squad. "Premier Reserve football is OK but there's no atmosphere". He was Hearts' number 3 keeper but never managed into the first team at Tynecastle, so is really excited at the prospect of playing at a higher grade and in front of a decent support.

He added, "No doubt I'll be a bit nervous at first, but all the lads at Queen of the South have made me welcome and it's been easy to fit in. I know Graham Weir from when he was a Hearts' player and, on hearing about my move. Robbie Neilson sat me down and joked that I'd enjoy myself, and that he was only there for about three months and won a Challenge Cup winner's medal.

"I even faced the Border TV cameras for the first time today and that was another new experience for me. I don't know yet whether I'll be playing or nor tomorrow, but if I am I'll be up for it".

Queens' boss backs 'Hearts First Hike' 26th January 2007
Ian McCall is urging locals to pull on their walking boots on February 25th to raise vital funds for British Heart Foundation (BHF) Scotland--while also helping keep their own hearts healthy.

Coronary heart disease remains Scotland's biggest single killer, claiming more lives than cancers, and yet reducing your risk is as easy a walk in the park.

BHF Scotland's sponsored 'Hearts First Hike' takes place in the Crichton on Sunday, 25th February. This five mile sponsored walk --in rain, hail, shine or snow--will raise vital funds to continue their pioneering research in Scotland and to fund BHF Heart Nurses like Jennifer Bell and Carolyn Brown who provide care and support for people with heart problems throughout Dumfriesshire.

Helping promote the 'Hearts First Hike' project at Palmerston are manager Ian McCall, skipper Jim Thomson, new signing Stephen Dobbie along with two BHF nurses and a BHF administrator. -Photograph from Jim McEwan.

The walk starts at 10 am and there is a registration fee of £6 for adults and £3 for children which helps cover the administration costs. Dogs are welcome.

The Queens' boss is only too aware of the stress that a football manager's job can place on the heart and the need for everyone to lead a healthy lifestyle.

He says, "Heart disease touches us all and the chances are that it has already affected you, your family or friends and colleagues. Sign up today for BHF, Scotland's 'Hearts First Hike' in Dumfries and help your own heart while raising vital funds for heart research and for BHF nursing care for heart patients".

BHF Heart Nurse, Jennifer Bell added, "It's a wonderful feeling to know that I am making someone's life a little easier, whether it's adjusting their medicines to improve everyday life or being at the end of a phone for advice and support". The daughter of one of Jennifer's patients, who sadly died last year, said, "Mum admired you for your skills and knowledge. She loved your visits because she knew you cared for her in every way. Thank you for the wonderful work you do".

To register please call the event hotline on 0800 028 7542 or e-mail scotland@bhf.org.uk. You may also register online at bhf.org.uk/events. Visit the website to find out more about BHF Scotland's events in 2007.

A second farewell for legend 25th January 2007
Legend, Andy Thomson, bid a second farewell to Palmerston this week after being released. He is fully expected to join Stenhousemuir in a player plus coaching deal. In his first spell with Queens Andy notched 109 goals in 185 matches--an amazing average--before moving to Southend United for a club record fee of £250,000 in May 1994. He returned to the club last January and scored another three up to May. But this season goals have been scarce and appearances few, however he did add a further two at home to Livingston.
His final total is now 114 making him our third highest markman of all time, only six behind Bobby Black, but still well behind big Jim Patterson on 251. Good luck, and thanks for the memories Andy.

Said Ian McCall, "Andy wanted First Team football and I couldn't promise him that. Other clubs were after him and I would never stand in his way. He had an exceptional scoring record with Queens when he was first here and he came back last season and helped us stay up in the 'Great Escape'. He will always be a legend at Palmerston and I wish Andy well for the future".

Thistle at Palmerston 24th January 2007
This Saturday Queens play hosts to Partick Thistle (apart from Gretna) the last team to beat us at Palmerston and that was back in October. In our two previous meetings this season we have played well against them but lost 2-0 at home and being denied a victory up at Firhill by a late free-kick. However, the vast majority of Queens' fans would agree that having picked up only a single point was an injustice and Ian McCall was quick to agree. Said the manager, "Yes, we should have done better but that's history now. The match at Firhill was one of our best away performances of the season together with the cup game at Dundee. But if the truth be told we should have had 10 to 12 more points on the board than we have at present and that's why we're where we are in the league.

"I'm working 'round the clock' to sign new players!. I know the type of players I'm looking for but it's not all that easy to get them.

"Over the next couple of weeks we are at home which gives us a great opportunity not only to add to our points tally, but to qualify for the quarter finals of the Scottish Cup as well. What a boost that would give us, so we must stay focussed on the task in hand".

Director for a day. 23rd January 2007
Thanks to the ‘QOS Action Group’ raffle, I was given the opportunity to be a guest director of Queen of the South F.C. for the match away to Dundee on 20th January. On my arrival at Palmerston I was heartily greeted by Chairman David Rae, Secretary Eric Moffat and club captain Jim Thomson. There were only a few of us on the first leg of the journey to Dundee with most of the team joining at a hotel near Cumbernauld. The atmosphere on the coach was much as I expected and totally different to my usual outings. Normally I am in the
company of the New Bazaar Doonhamers and our trips away are characterised by lively banter, raucous singing, sweeps and raffles. However, while we generally travel to matches looking to relax at the end of the working week, the opposite is true for the players and directors. The players were particularly quiet and each seemed focused in a manner reminiscent of a candidate heading for a job interview and determined to get the job. They passed the time by watching DVD’s (‘Snatch’ and ‘Lock, stock and two smoking barrels’) – with the only obvious link with football being the participation in each of ex-Wimbledon player Vinnie Jones.

Lunch was taken at a hotel in Broughty Ferry and the buffet comprised foods requested by Queens. Carbohydrate (for fuel) was high on the list and pasta, beans, toast, and crunchy nut corn flakes were on offer. Protein (to build and repair muscles) was present in the scrambled egg, fish, and chicken. The meal was completed with vanilla ice cream and jaffa cakes! Then it was off to the ground. Dens offers a stark contrast to those cloned modern stadia that look more like supermarkets than football parks. The oak lined board room was adorned with memorabilia covering 100 years of history for Dundee F.C. Amid the silver ware the walls were adorned with images of dark blue legends such as Charlie Cooke, Ian Ure and Alan Gilzean. At 2.30 the teams were announced. We often hear stories of clubs where the board influence team selection but this is not true of Queens where copies of the team sheet were eagerly snapped up and scrutinised by our board members. Sandwiches were also snapped up (by me)….well it would have been rude not to. I felt similarly constrained when the pies and Forfar bridies were brought out at half time (along with more sandwiches) and at full time when sandwiches and cakes were placed on the table. I hope I don’t appear greedy and state in my defence that I sent a text home to cancel my dinner! The journey home was a subdued one. Everyone was very flat and since the DVD of bare knuckle fights and shotguns failed to lift the spirits, I wished I had brought along my copy of ‘Shrek’.

I enjoyed my day and feel that I gained a very interesting glimpse behind the scenes. The professionalism of the manager, staff and players is impressive as is the commitment and resolve of the board. The Chairman’s attitude was demonstrated in one amusing episode. A party member drew the attention of the board to the pessimistic comments about Queens made by Des McKeown in his column in the ‘Sun’ newspaper. Being also a friend of the columnist, this party member quickly put a call through to Des to wind him up. The phone was then passed to David Rae who engaged in a bit of banter with the former Queens player in which he politely reminded him that Queens have been in worse positions and pulled through. With the determined attitude displayed by all on Saturday, who will doubt that we won’t do so again.

Match reaction 19th January 2007
A bad day for Queens. Not only did they lose 1-0 at Dundee but Ross County won 4-2 at Broadwood to open up an eight point gap only consolation was St Johnstone beating Airdrie United 4-3 after the men from Broomfield had pulled back from 3-0 down to draw level before St Johnstone eventually won the game. But back to the Dens Park match and it was that man Derek Lyle who scored the all important counter to avenge the cup defeat on Tuesday night The ex-Queens favourite eventually proved to be a scourge and netted five goals in five games against us since moving north last season. Queens had the better of the 1st half and ten minutes before half time Warren Moon missed a gilt edge chance to put us ahead and we paid the penalty as Dundee took control after the break and limited our chances in the second half to the disappointment of the 144 hardy travelling fans.

Said manager Ian McCall, "That must have been torture to watch - having to play each other three times in fifteen days is just crazy, after I got into the dressing room at half time I feared the worst as we'd missed four decent chances in the first period. But following that marathon in midweek I can't fault the players for effort - they gave their all. We didn't play well and I know Alex Rae will be saying the same about his players. I did a 'Jimmy Calderwood' in the later stages and pushed three players upfront but nothing happened."

A bit of history was made this afternoon with Queens substitute 'keeper Ross Hyslop, the Dumfries High School pupil making his debut on the bench at the tender age of fifteen years. Ross is the youngest player ever to represent Queens in a senior league match and probably in Scotland as well at that level.

News in brief 19th January 2007
Kilmarnock are still very keen to sign our 'wing wizard' Willie Gibson and Jim Jeffries and his assistant, Billy Brown, were down at Palmerston on Tuesday night to watch him perform. But Ian McCall re-iterated, "He won't be leaving on the cheap! I've spoken to Jim and told him the type of deal we're after, and he's going back up the road to discuss it with his Chairman".

On the keeper situation the manager added, "Barry John Corr will be in goal tomorrow and if he plays as well as in did in the cup replay I'll be well satisfied. But 'Scooter' is out for a week or two so we'll need back up. We've two 'possibles' at present but it's unlikely either will be signed in time to play tomorrow. We'll probably be forced to put young Ross Hyslop on the bench at Dundee although it's not ideal for a 15-year-old to be 'thrown in at the deep end' and it's not ideal for the club either. However, needs must!"

Ian has had a chat with Brooks Mileson regarding Steve Tosh but nothing positive has materialised yet. But a bit of good news--Andy Aitken could be back in action in six weeks time.

Chairman's thanks 18th January 2007
Chairman, David Rae, spoke out today to offer his personal gratitude to the Queens' fans for their support in Tuesday's Scottish Cup replay against Dundee. Said the Chairman, "It was a great turnout on such a damp, miserable evening and exceeded all my estimations. There were just under 250 down from Dundee which meant a home support of almost 1800 and, taking into account it was a cold winter's night and being midweek, I appreciated the turnout very much indeed. Your vocal support from start to finish was tremendous and you were all totally behind our lads for the full two hours plus.

"I would also like to pay tribute to the players of Queen of the South who played their hearts out and done the club proud. It was a real professional performance on an extremely heavy and difficult pitch, but they more than matched their 'full time' opponents throughout the entire match and even had the courage and energy left to beat them 4-2 in the penalty 'shoot out'

"We now meet Cowdenbeath at Palmerston in the fourth round and must guard against complacency, for it won't be easy. They'll be content with a draw and a replay on their own ground, so I fully expect them to play very defensively.

"If we get through to the quarter finals it will be our first time in 30 years. On that occasion we beat Montrose and Alloa Athletic to get there and were then drawn against Celtic at Parkhead. The game was played on a Sunday with 27,000 in attendance, and although we lost 5-1, we didn't disgrace ourselves and Peter Dickson scored our only goal.

"I would gladly settle for another match away to Celtic if we can beat Cowdenbeath. I wouldn't exactly expect to win but the financial rewards would be astronomical and what a benefit that would be for our club".

Travel Club Updates 18th January 2007
Following numerous complaints by Queens fans and a request from Doonhamers travel club member Rod Pool for Russell Brown MP to make enquiries regarding the recent overcharging of Queens fans at Livingston.Livingston finally made contact with Queens and decided to make out a cheque to cover the cost of all paying adults on the day.The travel club committee felt it was inappropriate for the club to receive the money as not all fans at Almondvale were travel cub members. The committee have since decided to sponsor latest signing S Dobbie's kit for the rest of the season.

Stephen's a 'happy chappie' 17th January 2007
Stephen Dobbie was still basking in cup glory when he spoke to the 'Website' early this morning. Said our new striker, "I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was great to score twice on my home debut and, with a bit of luck, I could have had a 'hat-trick'. The fans really gave both the team and myself a lift and I was pleased to show them what I can really do--score goals.

"When I came off we were 2-1 up and it was nerve wracking sitting in the dug out watching the match from the sidelines. But the lads dug in really well and I was always confident we'd win. At the 'shoot-out' we scored four out of five which isn't a bad average and they were all well struck penalties. We've now got Cowdenbeath at home which gives us a good chance to make it into the quarter finals, but we mustn't underestimate them. If we did make it through what a tremendous boost that would be for the club.

"We play Dundee yet again this Saturday and I think we could beat them again. Assuming I'm selected it would be my third game for Queen of the South, and all three of them against Dundee. That would be a good question for a pub quiz!"

Bill Goldie
Still upbeat 17th January 2007
Ian McCall was still very much upbeat on 'the morning after the night before'. Reflecting on last night's game he said, "It was a fantastic night for everyone concerned with Queen of the South and our fans helped make it that way. They were again tremendous and my personal thanks for the great support.

"It brought back memories of another game against Dundee back in 1977 when we beat them 6-0. I was just a boy at the time but it's always on my list of 'all time favourite matches'. Nevertheless it's time now to get down off 'cloud nine' and back to the reality of the league and in the next couple of games that's got to be our priority.

"We're back up to Dens Park again this Saturday and we all know they'll be out to avenge that cup win. They'll be some very tired legs after last night's match but it's a consolation to know that Dundee will be the same. It was just as hard on them than it was on us!. I'm expecting them to have three or four new faces in and we may need to 'freshen up' a bit as well. But one thing's for sure--Barry John Corr will be in goal although we're still on the lookout for another keeper with Colin Scott going in for minor surgery.

"Steve Tosh is still very high on my agenda and I hope to have a talk with Brooks Mileson to try and sort out the problem before the 'window' closes at the end of the month. Talks are also ongoing in Willie Gibson's proposed move to Kilmarnock and I'll be speaking to Jim Jeffries again today. But I'm in full agreement with the Chairman that we won't be selling Willie 'on the cheap' as he is a class player".

Match reaction 16th January 2007
A rip-roaring cup-tie which ended up 3-3 after extra time and a game that will be remembered for many a long day. Queens battled bravely and three times were in front, but on every occasion Dundee hit back to equalise. Even after half an hour's extra time neither side could break the deadlock and it took a penalty shoot-out before Queens emerged as winners.

Home fans had a shock just prior to kick-off when Colin Scott pulled out injured following the pre-match warm up and had to be replaced in goal by Barry John Corr. However, BJ turned out to be the 'hero of the hour', saving two penalties, as Queens won 4-2 in the shoot-out. Paul Burns, Jim Thomson, Willie Gibson and Neil Scally all found the net but Eric Paton's effort was saved.

Although keeper Corr was the hero, Man of the Match must go to new striker, Stephen Dobbie, who netted two great goals. Both sets of fans in the 2037 crowd got good value for money, but it's Queens who go forward to meet Cowdenbeath at Palmerston in the 4th round of the Scottish Cup.

Asked if he enjoyed the game Ian McCall was short and to the point. "No" he stated emphatically, "It was too nerve wracking. I didn't even watch the penalty 'shoot-out'--I just sat with my head in my hands and the reaction of the fans let me know how it was going.

"But we should have had it all sewn up by half time--we should have been 3-0 up at least. We were even ahead with only three minutes to go and a bad mistake gifted them the equaliser. It must have been a tremendous game to watch for the supporters, but not for me. We did get the right result in the end, but we didn't half make hard work of it.

"Stephen Dobbie had class and took his goals well, and when he reaches full fitness I'm sure he'll score even more. Barry John stood in at short notice and did really well. At one stage we'd just hit the post and their man raced up the park and BJ made a superb save. Had they scored then it might have finished us. And to save two penalties was brilliant and won us the game. I watched him play four times for Stranraer before I signed him. He played well in all four games and that's why I brought him to Palmerston. With Colin out now it gives him the chance to prove himself.

"Someone had to win and I'm delighted it was us and I was proud of my players for the effort they gave. However, I felt for their player manager, Alex Rae and also for Del Lyle who were exceptional".

Added Barry John Corr, "I only knew 10 minutes before kick-off that Colin was injured and that I was playing. It was all so unexpected that I hadn't much time to think about it too much. With Colin now out I must try and grab the chance to win the keeper's jersey back and although I'm sorry for him, it might just have 'opened a door' for me".

Up for the Cup 15th January 2007
A massive carrot is out there dangling for the winners of tomorrow night's Scottish Cup replay between Queens and Dundee. A win and success against either Brechin City or Cowdenbeath in the next round would see us through to the quarter finals for the first time in 30 years but Ian McCall is wise enough and experienced enough not to 'count any chickens before they're hatched' and warned, "Sure, there's a big incentive out there for us, but it's a big incentive for Dundee as well and they'll also be 'fighting tooth and nail' to win through. Nevertheless, we have home advantage now, so we must try and make it count. I'm not looking any further forward than tomorrow night at present but having said that, neither Brechin nor Cowdenbeath will be too daunted by a visit to Palmerston or Dens Park as they're 'stuffy' sides. There's an awful lot can happen before we even contemplate quarter finals!"

Asked if he was glad with Saturday's league match being called off the manager responded, "Normally I'm 'gutted' when a game is postponed at such short notice, but knowing on Friday night that the Ross County and Airdrie matches were off made it better. But the 'other side of the coin' is the fact that had we played and won we would have closed the gap and put added pressure on both those sides. But, I suppose, you can't have it every way!"

Tomorrow's game kicks-off at 7.45 pm.

Apart from Andy Aitken every one else is available for selection--even our two new signings. However, it's almost certain to be Colin Scott's last game for a short spell. 'Degsy'--a no-no 15th January 2007
Former Queens' favourite Derek Townsley's name had been linked with Queens over the weekend but Ian McCall acknowledged, "Gretna did phone us and offered us first choice on Derek Townsley if we were interested. Big Derek is an excellent player and was probably one of their star men when they beat us at Palmerston at the beginning of the month. He's possibly got another couple of good years left, but we're not too bad for cover at the back now and there's other positions which I feel more important to fill during the transfer window".

New signings air their views 12th January 2007
In their first official interview since joining Queens, Jamie McQuilken and Stephen Dobbie spoke to the 'Website' yesterday and both insisted they had no hesitation in signing on at Palmerston.

Said Jamie, "Last Saturday's cup tie was my first competitive match in three months and I'm glad we came away with a decent result and I'm now looking forward to the replay. We created enough openings to win at Dens Park! Not too many punters gave us a chance but the boys displayed a lot of character, coming back from one down to draw.

"When Ian McCall first approached me I didn't need to think twice before accepting. I'd worked with Ian before at Falkirk and we got on well together and it was nice to renew our friendship once again. Not only that, but I wanted to get back playing first team football again after my heart scare, and I feel great now".

A Glaswegian, Jamie is confident that Queens can catch up and avoid the drop. "They did it last season" he emphasised. "And we can do it again".

Added Stephen Dobbie, "I really enjoyed it on Saturday and we had the chances to win it at the first attempt. I enjoyed playing up front with big Sean--he won a lot of balls in the air and his goal was a tremendous finish". Although he was a St Johnstone player 'Dobs' admitted that he was happy during his five month loan spell at Dumbarton. "They're a good club and looked after me well. I scored 11 goals for them when I was there and was satisfied with my contribution. But, nevertheless, it's great to be back playing in the First Division again and playing for a well known club like Queen of the South. The pace is a lot quicker than it was in Division Three but after a few games I'll soon get used to it again.

"The move to Queens came surprisingly quickly. I met Ian McCall in Glasgow on the Thursday, the forms were all signed on Friday and I was playing for my new club at Dundee on the Saturday. It won't be easy but I think we can win the replay on Tuesday night and get through to the next round".

On Saturday Queens face a team who have a similar away record to ourselves--only one league win all season. But, unfortunately, that win was against us. This will be the fourth meeting with the men from Broadwood to date. We beat them convincingly in the CIS Cup back in August but our two displays in the league can only be described as woeful and Ian McCall fully agreed. Added the manager, "We did well against them in the cup game. We won 4-2 that night but it could well have finished 6-5 had all the chances been taken. However, in the two league fixtures we were awful--in fact the match at Palmerston was the worst we've played all season.

"But, apart from a couple of bad results, I think we've done a lot better over the last two months although we must start turning those draws into wins if we are to move up the table".

Asked about the Dundee replay Ian replied, "We're all fully focussed on Saturday's game at present for it's one I want to win. We'll start talking about the Dundee game on Monday".

On the proposed Gibson move to Kilmarnock he said, "It's still very much on the cards and will happen, but when, I don't know. I want Willie for the cup replay against Dundee so nothing will take place before then".

On other signings he stated, "I'm actively searching for new players all the time at the moment. I'd like to think I'll have a minimum one and a maximum two in for Saturday"

Match reaction 6th January 2007
A satisfying result for the 203 Queens fans who made the trip to Dens Park this afternoon and, perhaps, a fair result as well. The two sides will now fight it all out again at Palmerston on (probably a week on Tuesday) the prize for the victors will be known tomorrow when the draw for the next round takes place. Our two new signings Jamie McQuilken and Stephen Dobbie both did well considering they were 'thrown in at the deep end', so to speak and Ian McCall was happy with the 1-1 scoreline. It was ex-Queens favourite Derek Lyle who put Dundee ahead in the 32nd minute but Sean O'Connor netted a timely equaliser on the stroke of half time. A good result for Queens considering Dundee had just won four games in a row at Dens Park.

Afterwards the manager said, "Overall I was happy with a draw. Before the game I would have been content with a replay at Dumfries and that's what we've got. But we had all the best chances and when they scored I was ready for a pep talk at half-time however when big Sean netted I had to change it a bit. For weeks now I've been asking our strikers to score and it did happen today - and what a terrific strike it was. Our two new players were naturally a bit 'rusty' but I was happy with how they both played. Stephen Dobbie looked sharp and got through a lot of work and he has the ability to score a lot of goals".

Said Chairman David Rae, "I don't normally single out individuals but I must praise Sean O'Connor for his performance this afternoon. He was my man of the match and his goal was superb".

It's three years since Queens made it through to the fourth round of the Scottish Cup but they'll be hoping to clear that third round hurdle when they take on Dundee at Dens Park tomorrow. In early season we lost 2-1 up there but got revenge with a fine display and a 2-0 victory at Palmerston in November with John O'Neill bagging a brace that afternoon.

Said Ian McCall, "It's a cup tie and anything can happen. We've had a couple of tight games with them already this season so we're looking forward to another battle. They'll be a big crowd and that always helps add to the atmosphere".

Willie Gibson is suspended since he picked up two yellow cards against Hamilton in last season's competition. Andy Aitken, of course, is still sidelined and so too is young Mark Whorlow who picked up an ankle injury in training last night which could see him out for around six weeks.

Queens actually dominated in the early stages and a Willie Gibson shot looked net bound but 'keeper Alan Main turned it round the post for a corner. And that was to be the nearest we came to scoring. The Gretna defence was strong and soaked up all that Queens threw at them although it has to be said that we had more of the territorial advantage but again the lack of an 'out and out' striker was apparent. Willie Gibson was a wizard on the wing and our best player and will be surely missed should be move to Kilmarnock. Queens could not be faulted for effort but Gretna proved just why they are top of the table with clinical finishing and the 3,000 home fans in the 3,714 crowd once again went home dejected.

Manager Ian McCall conceded, "They were the better team and deserved to win but there were never four goals in it. They have the best two centre backs and the best two strikers in the league and have the finances to attract players like that. They had the pace and menace that we lacked and their forwards tormented our defence. Our strikers are short on confidence but we'll be bringing in some new faces in the window.

"We had the better of the game in the first twenty minutes, their 'keeper made a great save from Willie Gibson and we hit the bar, however their opening goal was a real 'killer' and we never really recovered from that although our players gave their all. To lose 4-0 on our home ground to our local rivals hurts and I feel for the club and for the supporters".

Team news for the big game 1st January 2007
Apart from Andy Aitken Queens hope to have a full squad available for tomorrow's local derby clash with Gretna at Palmerston. Colin Scott is ready to take over in goal for Craig Hinchcliffe whose loan spell ended yesterday. Following Saturday's match at Ross County the keeper actually stayed in the Highlands over the weekend and was included in the St Mirren squad who met Inverness Caley Thistle up there today. In preparation for the Gretna game Queens had a full training session at the Kingholm this morning.

Signing News 1st January 2007
Ian McCall did make a last minute attempt to secure an extension to Craig Hinchcliffe's loan deal at the weekend. Although unsuccessful he intends approaching Gus McPherson again in the hope of signing the St Mirren keeper on a pre-contractual deal for next season.

On the subject of Steve Tosh and Jamie McQuilken the manager added, "Both players have agreed terms with us and subject to a financial settlement by Gretna, I expect Stevie and Jamie to be Queen of the South players by Thursday".

Hope springs eternal 31st December 2006
Despite losing to Ross County on Saturday Ian McCall remains upbeat although bitterly disappointed with the result at Dingwall. Said the manager, "That was only the third time we've lost in our last 10 games and it's another we should have won, especially with them down to 10 men in the latter stages. The chances we missed were ridiculous and with new faces coming in during the January 'Window' they'll all be playing for their places now.

"But we must be realistic! Although we've slipped to the foot of the league again it's still tight at the bottom. Ross County and Airdrie United are the two clubs we must get above and we've still to play them both at Palmerston. In fact, we meet Airdrie at home in the last match of the season! There's 16 games left to play and nine of them are at Palmerston and we haven't lost at home since we went down to Partick Thistle in mid-October. And, as I've preached so many times before--we fear no side on our own ground.

"At this time last year we had only 9 points on the board and this season we have 17. When we lost down at Stranraer last New Year we trailed them by 12 points and managed to survive and I'm confident we can do so again. In recent weeks there were three games on the trot we should have won but ended up only drawing by conceding late goals. We picked up just three points when it should have been nine--to me it was six points dropped and what a difference that would have made.

"However, I can't fault my players for lack of effort over the past couple of weeks--they've given their all! My big regret is the number of chances that's been missed and with these new players coming I'd like to think that problem will be remedied."

Looking forward to the big game against Gretna on Tuesday the manager is well aware of the enormity of the task ahead of us and added, "They're 11 points clear at the top of the table and have lost only twice away from home in the league so far. They beat us 5-0 at Raydale in our last meeting and I'd be first to accept that we didn't play at all well that afternoon. The players and myself got a 'bit of stick' but what many didn't accept was just how well Gretna themselves played that day.

"Our home gates are well up on last season with almost 26,000 passing through the turnstiles and I'm sure the Gretna match will swell the club's coffers even more. Our fans have been tremendous all season--particularly those who travel to the away games. Over 100 made the long trek to Dingwall on Saturday and those faithful followers are to me the heart and soul of this club. On occasions, such as Broadwood, St Johnstone and Gretna, they let us know how they felt, and deservedly so, but that has been overshadowed 10 times over by the magnificent support and vociferous backing they have given at other times. I wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year and remember our slogan, 'Yer hame team's yer ain team'!"

Video clips 31st December 2006
Some fans have experienced a bit of difficulty downloading the video clips provided in the match reports. There are a couple of recent changes, the first is that the size of the clips has increased significantly as the take up of broadband has increased - it is now much easier to post them and for everyone to download them. The second is that sometimes the clips have been provided in a format that behaves slightly differently when downloaded and requires that you have the Quicktime video player loaded on your machine to play them (Apple MOV format).

So for the Jim Thomson overhead kick goal clip from the Livingston win last week we have provided a version in a Windows media player format (Microsoft AVI format). So you can either go to the Fixtures and Results page, access the archived match report and click on the second version of the clip or download it from the link below. Remember to right click and choose 'Save As' before trying to play the clip.

One for the history books - a Jim Thomson overhead kick - from David Gow on the terracing - Alternative video format (avi clip) if you cannot get the original format clip to play on your machine
Match reaction 30th December 2006
Last week Queens set themselves up for a Happy Christmas with a good 1-0 win at Livingston but the same can't be said this Saturday as they went down by the only goal of the game at Ross County. To make matters worse Airdrie United won 3-1 at Almondvale so Queens now start the new year in bottom place with league leaders Gretna the opposition at Palmerston on the second of January. Once more shot shy Queens scorned their chances in the opening twenty minutes and paid the penalty when Ross County scored with their first real chance of the game. Queens totally dominated the early stages but Graham Weir and John O'Neill both missed clear scoring chances and even at 1-0 down they had a couple of great opportunities to equalise in the second half. But again they went abegging so it will be a long sad journey home for the 106 faithful Doonhamers fans tonight.

Ian McCall was totally frustrated at the final whistle and with all the domination Queens had he couldn't understand how they were leaving Dingwall with nothing. Added the manager, "We again created some clear openings but the chances we are missing just now are absolutely ridiculous." Although nothing is fully certain in football he stated that two new players Stevie Tosh and Jamie McQuilken should be signed by next Saturday. It's just a pity that the duo won't be on board for Tuesday's local derby.

Team News 28th December 2006
Colin Scott and Paul Burns return to the Queens' squad for the long trip to Ross County. Both were unfit last week and missed the Livingston match. Although Graham Weir had to leave the field at Almondvale he suffered no more than a 'black eye' and is itching to play. Craig Hinchcliffe is available but his loan deal expires on the 31st of December and, unless an extension is agreed, it could be his last game for us.

They're all important says the manager 27th December 2006
Queens set off on the road to the Highlands on Friday to take on Ross County in another crucial encounter. However, they'll be going up there in a confident frame of mind, four games unbeaten and Jim Thomson's spectacular winner at Livi still fresh in their minds. Yet Ian McCall insists, "Yes, it's a crucial one but every match we play at the moment is important. There's no doubt that it's a big, big game for, if we win we go back up into 8th place again.

"We're doing well at the moment and, apart from that blip at Broadwood against Clyde we've only lost once on our last six outings and, going further back, we've only been beaten twice in our past nine matches. We'll be taking it one step at a time for, after Ross County we're at home to Gretna and I'd love to get a result in that one for our fans who have been immense all season.

"If we can perform as we did at Livingston on Saturday I'm not bothered who we play! On form we're as good as any team in our league. We changed it around a bit on Saturday and, apart from a great all-round team effort, there were some excellent individual performances as well. Again we created plenty of chances and what more can I say about Jimmy Thomson's overhead kick which brought our goal.

"We trained today and we'll be training again tomorrow. Festive season or not, there's no rest for footballers at this time of the year. We'll be leaving for Dingwall on Friday and, as usual, staying overnight in the Inverness area, and this also serves as a good bonding session".

The manager also stressed that there have been no movement as yet on the three targeted players, Steve Tosh, Jamie McQuilken and the Newcastle striker.
