QUESTION John Williamson
Dear Ian, Prior to the First World War there were so many Australian medical students attending Scottish Universities they formed their own Australian Club in plush premises at 12 Archibald Place in Edinburgh. Many were Australian Rules players who converted to the rugby code whilst they were in Scotland eg RH Morrison and AB Timms played for Scotland and both were champion Aussie Rules players with Geelong. (Many Scots were involved in the beginnings of Aussie Rules in Melbourne in the late 1850's ie Alexander Morrison from Aberdeen the headmaster of Scotch College organised the 'first match' in August 1858, the co-umpire was John Macadam from Glasgow and the first Challenge Cup for the code was donated at the Victorian Caledonian Games on the MCG in Dec 1861. I am trying to check on a story which was on the front page of a periodical called ‘Scottish Sport’ and read thus-A football match was played at Albert Park, Melbourne, Australia, on 11th May last, between Carlton and South Melbourne, in splendid weather. Carlton started the ball, and, after some give-and-take play, opened the score with a splendid low shot from the foot of J.Burns. South Melbourne tried hard to equalise, but the defence was too good and, towards the close, Carlton added two other goals from Burns - the teams crossing over 3 to 0 in favour of Carlton. On re-starting, the South Melbourne scored from Grant (late Queen of the South Wanderers). The Carlton also scored this half. Result - 4 to 1 in favour of Carlton.

Camelon and Queen of the South were both Scottish rugby teams, which begs a number of questions. Were Burns and Grant themselves of Scottish origin, or were they perhaps Australians who had spent some time in Scotland? How many other players with Scottish - or indeed British - connections were playing in the VFA at this time?

Ian, do you know if Camelon and Queen of the South Wanderers were rugby teams and would you have any record of J Burns (Camelon) or Grant of Queen of the South Wanderers. We don't know if they are Aussies or Scots.

Yours sincerely

John Williamson
ANSWER
John, Queen of the south Wanderers were a football club and not a rugby club they came from Dumfries they were founded in 1873 and folded in 1894. Had a look at some old team photos of Q of s Wands but could not find a player called Grant.

QUESTION Anne Marie
My uncle, James Tulips used to play for Falkirk in 1937/38. He previously played for Blantyre Celtic. I found a newspaper report for January 1938 for a Q O S V St. Mirren game, which mentioned a goal scored by a player called Tulip (note the singular version of the name). Our name is often spelt wrongly as the singular version, though it is common in England. Can you tell me if my uncle also Played for Q of the S, or is this another person entirely?

My father told me many years ago, that when uncle James scored a goal there was a headline in the paper saying "Tiptoe through the Tulips". Since this headline may have been in "pink pages of Evening Times", which are not archived by Mitchell Library, seems I cannot prove this story.

Your help would be appreciated.

My great-grandfather Johnnie Irving played 3 seasons for the club in the late 1880`s. He and the rest of the team bar the goalie left for England in 1889. Johnnie then played 10 seasons for Lincoln city. Do you have any details of this era of the club?

Hi Paul, your great-grandfather actually played for Queen of the South Wanderers, a team that had no connection to our club and who had been disbanded some years before we were founded in 1919, however as they were also a Dumfries based side we do have some information on them and their players.

The information on Johnnie that we have is as follows; Born 1867, died 1942 in Nottingham aged 75 years. He spent two years at QoSW before moving to Lincoln City in 1889, Newark Town, Lincoln City again where he went on to become their trainer. He was also a club director at Lincoln City between 1897 and 1901, his two sons followed him onto the board in later years.

Against Nairn the side was:- Ball, Collins, Trialist, McLaren, Boyd, Clarkson, Dempster, Law, Bradley, Bryce, Thorburn. The game was played on the 28th July and the Highland side ran out 2-1 winners.

On the 30th July we faced Elgin City with the following line-up:- Ball, Collins, Jardine, McLaren, Boyd, Dickson, Dempster, Law, Bradley, Bryce, Thorburn. We won that game 3-1 with Bryce scoring two and Jardine the other.

The final game was against Wick Academy with an identical line-up to the Elgin game, we won that match 2-0 with Bryce netting along with an own goal from the Wick side.

QUESTION Willie Pool
With Andy Thomson back in the team how many more goals would he have to score (to better Bobby Black and Jim Patterson) to move up from the clubs 3rd highest to 2nd highest and finally highest goal scorer?
ANSWER
With Andy presently on 112 (18/09/06)goals he needs to net another 8 to equal Bobby Black which may well be possible, however to equal the great Jim Patterson 'Super Andy' needs to knock in another 139 - not really a possibility, so Jim's record is safe and will be for a very long time.

QUESTION Paul Beckley
Can you give any details of a friendly played at Palmerston against Manchester City, probably late 70's or early 80's. I remember Man City wore red and black away kit, and I am positive Danny McGrain played for us at some point during the game. Cheers PB
ANSWER
This was Allan's second testimonial for the club, his first was a match against Carlisle United in 1971. The game you refer to took place on the 9th September 1984 when City manager Billy McNeill brought his side to play a Queens select. The Queens side did indeed feature Danny McGrain from Celtic as well as Davie Cooper from Rangers and a former Queens hero in the shape of a certain Rowan Alexander who was with St.Mirren by that time. The football was secondary though and despite the 5-1 victory for City it was a great occasion for everyone.

QUESTION Laurence Seagrave
Hi, An enquiry as to wether Larry Seagrave played for QOS appears on your web site. Larry Seagrave played one game for QOS in season 1925-26, in which he broke his leg. He played under an alias (not known) which he did with several clubs. The reason for this is that he had amateur status and made some money as a sort of football mercenary, which was fairly common at that time. He also did this with Sunderland, Albion Rovers and possibly Celtic. The wages clubs of the time offered to players were generally very poor and tradesmen could earn more working at their trade and playing football on the side.

I have noticed several enquiries which appear to have been fruitless and this may be one of the reasons that some players are not registered with the club.

I would also like to add that your web site is very interesting indeed. Keep up the good work.

Hi Laurence, thanks very much for the information. Looking again it could well be that the alias used by Larry was 'Newman'. We have one listed for the match that took place on the 26th December 1925.

QUESTION Tommy Proudfoot
I'd be grateful if you could research available records and confirm the number of my appearances for both the reserves and first team, league/cups and friendlies, giving details of opponents if possible. I was registered with Queens during '79 to '82 under 3 managers, Willie ? - I ought to remember, he signed me! , Billy Little and George Herd.

Many thanks,

Tommy
ANSWER
Firstly Tommy it was Willie Hunter that signed you. On the other questions we'll see what we can come up with.

Signed in October 1979 from your home town side Annan Athletic you made 8 appearances out of a possible 39 in your first season. In the following season you made 14 appearances plus two as substitute scoring one league goal in our promotion season. Your first game was at home versus Stranraer on 27 October 1979 and your last versus Montrose at Palmerston on 6 December 1980.

You played in the following friendlies:
Sheffield Wednesday 1980/81
Ards 1980/81 (scoring two goals)
and you may have played in more but we just don't have 100% comprehensive records. All of the other appearances were in league matches with no cup appearances that we can see.

Queens have played against Manchester United just the once. In a challenge match in aid of the Lockerbie disaster appeal. QUESTION Bill Calderhead
I am carrying out family history research, and am currently interested in David Calderhead, who played for Queen of the South Wanderers in the 19th century, and subsequently became the long-serving manager of Chelsea. Any personal information about him (eg date of joining your club, age at that time, performance, etc) would be greatly appreciated.
ANSWER
Davie Calderhead never actually played for Queen of the South. He did however play for Queen of the South Wanderers, a totally unrelated team from Dumfries side who pre-date the formation of the current Queen of the South, they were kicked out of the Scottish League for making illegal payments to players. They played on a number of pitches in and around Dumfries including a few matches at Palmerston Park.

Davie lined up for a couple of junior sides in Wishaw before moving to QOSWanderers, then on to Notts County, Lincoln City and Chelsea. His son, also Davie featured for Lincoln, Chelsea, Motherwell, Leicester Foss, Clapton Orient and Lincoln City again as Secretary/Manager.

Davie senior made 285 appearances for Notts County scoring twelve goals and featured for the Football League (English) in the days when only Scottish based players were eligible to play for Scotland. As a manager he was the first to pay a four figure fee for a player when he bought Fred Rouse from Stoke City.

Bit early to be speculating I know but could you tell me what the current capacity of Palmerston is and how many we can hold seated. Also is the old away end permanently closed off for safety reasons or could it be re-opened?
ANSWER
The capacity at Palmerston is presently 6,412, it breaks down to 3,509 seated and 2,903 standing. The Terregles Street end has been closed for some years and would require significant work to restore it to a condition whereby it could be included on the stadium safety certificate.

Two questions

1. Anyone know what became of McMinn after leaving Chester City. Is he coaching at all or completely retired?

2. You mention a memorabilia site opening up some time. Can you please advise when and what the link will be?

Thank you
ANSWER
Ted McMinn is, as far as we know, out of the game at present after leaving Chester City.

The Queens memorabilia site that was mentioned is, we believe, nearing completion and is shortly to be launched onto the world wide web. The name of the site will stir memories for those fans that used to frequent the enclosure that once stood directly across from the main stand. The site is presently on the internet but is in development and as such is not being advertised. As soon as it is complete and ready for visitors I'm sure that it will be announced on the official and unofficial Queen's websites.

QUESTION Glen Morton
i need somebodys help. was there a player called Hogg between 1958-1964 for QOTS? Cheers

Not according to our records and certainly not a first team player. However the player may have been a reserve squad member as we do not have full details for these.

QUESTION Russel Campbell
I wondered if you had the appearances and goals details for Maurice Elliott from the early sixties from his two spells at Queens, either side of being at Hearts ?

My mother remembered him from Collin, just 4 miles south of Dumfries when she was growing up, and was 1 year above her at Marchmount. I know I heard of his death a few years ago in the Queens programme, dying whilst on holiday in Portugal.
ANSWER
Maurice Elliott made his Queens debut on 13th August 1960 and played his last match for Queens on 28th March 1964. He featured forty times and scored twenty two goals. He moved to Hearts and then onto Montrose, Stenhousemuir and then Broxburn United before retiring after a second cartilidge operation.

Ian Black

Ian Black
QUESTION John Dempsey
I would like to have any information on William Dempsey. He played in the late 1920's or 1930's,any information would be appreciated.
ANSWER
There are no records of any first team player called Dempsey having appeared for Queens until 1947 when John Dempsey played some reserve matches for the side, he joined from Dennistoun Waverly. William may have been a reserve player as we do not have full records for the reserves.

QUESTION Lez Coupland
Ian can you check again please. The game was at Palmerston against Chesterfield and we won 2-0.
ANSWER
You're right Lez, having checked again we did indeed play Chesterfield at Palmerston in season 1971/72, it was the 27th October and Queens won the match 2-0 infront of a 1200 crowd. The team was Ball, Connell, Totten, Milligan, Scott, McChesney, Black, Law, Anderson, Evans and Tam Bryce (Mk1), Substitute was Gilmour.

QUESTION Peter Bryden
Did Scott McClean (the current partick striker)and 1st division top scorer last season ever play for queens on loan during the last couple of season at all? I'm sure he did but my friend says he never!

Please settle this argument.
ANSWER
Well first of all he is now a St.Mirren player and was at Palmerston only a couple of weeks ago for the Buddies. He did play for Queens on loan from Inverness in season 1999/2000 when he made three first team appearances, against Partick and Ross County at home and Stirling Albion away, he didn't score for Queens and returned to Inverness after his three games.

The match reports from the games he featured in are still on the site, check the 'Previous Season' link on the second page and then the 'Man of the Match' link for that season.
QUESTION Liam Noname!
can u tell me if kevin sharpe as ever played for queen of the south

Yes he did, in season 1992/93 he made two substitute appearances against East Fife on 13 th February 1993 and against Clyde on 16th February 1993, again Kevin was primarily a member of the Southern Counties side that was running at the time.

QUESTION Lez Coupland
I remember a friendly against Chesterfield when I was a kid, I think it was a Wednesday night game and the score being 2-0. What was the crowd and the exact date?
ANSWER
4th August 1971 Lez, we lost 2-0 to Chesterfield at the Recreation Ground, the team was Ball, Milligan, McLean, McIntyre, Easton, McChesney, Murray, Hamilton, Black, Donald, Law.

We don't have a record of the crowd.

QUESTION Rosie Hair
Can you give me further details of a game I attended, early - mid 1990's, which went to penalties against Dundee (probably a cup game) It was one of the best games of football I've ever attended. Barney was in goal, I think Jimmy Maguire and Andy Thompson were playing. Willie Jamieson played in the Dundee side. It was a midweek game, Queens won on penalties & the crowd were on their feet!!! Incidentally, my husband Phil played in goal in the late 1980's - mid 1990's too. Any info on him or his father Danny Hair, who also played in goal?
ANSWER
First of all Rosie, the answer to the Dundee question is that we played them at Palmerston on 21st August 1990 in the second round of the League Cup, it was 1-1 at full-time with Gary Fraser having scored our goal and at the end of extra-time it was 2-2 with Budgie McGhie scoring our second goal and a Dundee player being sent off in that period.

The game went to penalties for the first time ever at Palmerston, Barney saved two of the Dundee efforts and with Ian Thomson, Jimmy Robertson, Gary Fraser and Tommy Sloan all scoring for Queens the tie was won.

The side was:

1. A Davidson, 2. T McCafferty, 3. I Thomson, 4. G Fraser, 5. K Hetherington, 6. B McGhie, 7. A Thomson, 8. F McGarvey, 9. S Gordon, 10. B Sim, 11. J McGuire, Substitutes - T Sloan, N Anderson

Phil Hair made three appearances for Queens, 30th January 1993 versus Queen's Park, 8th May 1993 versus East Fife and 15th May 1993 versus Alloa. He joined Queens from a local amateur team and was primarily our Southern Counties 'keeper that season.

We do not have any records of any other Hairs who played first team football for Queens, he may have been a reserve player though as the records there are not complete.

Ian Black
QUESTION Alastair Gordon

1992/93 - 18 appearances - 7 Substitute - 0 goals

Released by Queens that season.

His record at Hamilton was 46 appearances - 2 Substitute - 15 goals.

QUESTION Brian Murphy
I seem to recollect my late father telling me that Queens once played a Celtic side at the old Cally Park(on Eastfield Rd)is there any truth in this.
ANSWER
The 28th January 1905 saw Celtic make their first ever appearance in Dumfries as they took on Dumfries in the first round of the Scottish Cup at Eastfield Road. The score was 2-1 to Celtic.

A copy of the programme for this match was auctioned this week and very nearly, but not quite, obtained for the Queen of the South Museum.

QUESTION Ken McRae
My great grandfather, William "Skin" Lawson played in goal for Queen of the South Wanderers in the 19th Century. He was a contemporary of David Calderhead (later Manager of Chelsea ) and was reputed to have played in goal for Scotland against England in one of the earliest representative matches between the 2 countries.

However I have never been able to verify this? Can you or can you supply any interesting details about "Skin" Lawson. He played in the days when the strikers of the day were able to bundle goalkeepers (holding the ball) into the back of the net and the result was a goal. "Skin" Lawson had a reputation supposedly for leaping up and holding on to the crossbar to make clearances and following through ( or was that a myth?) I would be interested in any details concerning his time with QOSW.
ANSWER
According to all the records that we hold William did not make an international appearance for Scotland versus England. We do however have the following photograph of him, courtesy of Pam Felgate and a copy of his death notice from the press.

ANSWER
Two answers to this question Tom, the first version of QOSW went out of business in season 1889-90, they almost immediately started up again as Leafield Swifts, then changed their name to Dumfries Wanderers and then back to Queen of the South Wanderers again, in 1894 they folded for the second and last time.

Whilst in existence they played their home games at a number of grounds, Cresswell Park(Fire Station), Palmerston Park, Nunholm, Kingholm Merse, Rosevale Park, Nunfield, Caledonian Park and Recreation Park.
QUESTION Diane Marshall Oshman
I know my Grandfather John Marshall played for Queens sometime between 1915 thru 1926, do you have any info on him. Any help would be deeply appreciated.

ANSWER
By coincidence your father featured in the same match as one of those played in by George Cruickshank, see the question below. The only first team game that Eddie played in was against Hexham on 24th April 1952 in Hexham with the score 3-2 to Queens. He played in a few reserve matches that season but left us at the end of 1951/52.

QUESTION Ted Durney, Malcolm Forsbrook, Fraser Bowman
What is a doonhamer?
ANSWER
The term doonhamer comes from the way that natives of Dumfries over the years have referred to the area when working away from home. The town is often referred to as doon-hame, (down home), the term doonhamer then naturally followed to describe those from Dumfries. Various stories exist as to who were originally christened as Doonhamers, I was always lead to believe that it was the railway workers as they went up and down the line to Glasgow, but other stories exist about others being the original doonhamers. Whatever the origin the people of Dumfries are proud to be known as Doonhamers.

QUESTION Colin Lind
Can you give me any info you have on Ian Smith who played for Queens Dec 82 to ? I am sure he played against Stranraer on Jan 1st 1983 and scored a couple of goals in a 6-3 thriller.
ANSWER
Ian Smith played three games for Queens as a trialist that season, against Arbroath on the 27th December, Stranraer on the 1st January and Meadowbank on the 4th January, he didn't sign as we believe he was moving to England.

He actually only scored one goal in the 6-3 victory versus Stranraer, the others came from the more well known names of Cloy, Alexander, Coughlin and Cochrane - 2.

QUESTION David Gow
Ian

I've just been reading Bob Crampsey's 1990 book The first 100 years. In this he quotes Queens attendances in the first division league for 1987/88 as 28,200 for 22 games. Is this accurate? If so we must have been averaging 1280 per match. We finished 7th in a 12 team league , so a relatively OK season. If this is correct then surely it gives a little historical perspective on the current controversy over league attendances?

Final question: what's the lowest recorded league crowd or any crowd at Palmerston for a competitive first team game?

Cheers

David
ANSWER
David

The Bob Crampsie figures are accurate and a season by season averages table appeared in the programme this past Saturday that also confirms this. Our lowest recorded figure at Palmerston was 300 on 4th May 1974 when Alloa Athletic were the opponents in an end of season encounter that saw Queens record a 1-0 victory.

QUESTION Lez Coupland
Queens always give their record victory as 11-1 versus Stranraer. Was it not 12-1 versus Whithorn in the Scottish Cup?
ANSWER
Queens did defeat Whithorn 12-1, it was a Scottish Qualifying Cup game that took place on September 25th 1920, however Queens were not a league side at that time and the records that are held relate to Queens as a league club. There was another victory by a greater margin than the 11-2 game and that was an 11-0 match versus Tarff Rovers in 1921/22 season again in the Qualifying Cup, Queens were in the Western League at the time so again that one doesn't count. Our first season in the league proper was 1924/25.

Hope that helps Lez.

Can you list all the player's that were signed by Queen of the South direct from English League sides in the 1960's please ?
ANSWER
A very tough question indeed and one that we do not have a straightforward answer to at the moment, however there is a publication presently in production and possibly to be entitled 'A Statistical History of Queen of the South' which will cover every statistic you could ever want to know. It is being written by Ian Black, Andy Penn and Bill Hume with a tentative publication date at least three years away.
QUESTION A Nisbet
Could you tell me if you have on record, a player named Alexander Nisbet? I believe he may have featured as a trialist in the 50's. If so, who did he play against and when?
ANSWER
The records that we hold do not cover players who appeared as trialists, however we have checked back through the first team and there was no Nisbet playing at any time for Queens. A player called Tom Nesbitt did play in the 1930's and that is the closest match.

QUESTION Craig McCall
While checking out your A-Z section I was wondering how far back your archives go back because I was looking for my grandfather who played for Queen's in 1919 to 1921 or even earlier or later. His name is William(Puff) McCall . Thanks.
ANSWER
William "Puff" McCall made 24 appearances in season 1919/20 scoring 11 goals and 10 appearances in season 1920/21 scoring 3 goals, his obituary, taken from the Standard covers his playing career as follows:

"The death has occurred of a well-known local footballer of former years, Mr William ("Puff") McCall, of 54 Holm Avenue, Dumfries, Mr McCall, who was 68 died in Dumfries Infirmary on Monday.

While a pupil at Glasgow Street School he was the captain of the Scottish Schoolboys' team.

He served in the Great War with the 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers, and after the war returned to soccer, and the Maxwelltown Juniors (known locally as the "Fish Suppers"). Joining Queen of the South in 1919 - the year of their inception - he played many a good game at outside left for Queens during his stay at Palmerston.
[Puff McCall]
Mr McCall was transferred to Blackburn Rovers along with McKinnell and Wylie about 1920. From there he went to Wolverhampton Wanderers for what was in those days a big fee.

After several years with Southampton he finished his professional playing career with Carlisle United.

However, his interest in soccer remained strong as ever and he became trainer for a local team - Troqueer Juniors. He was with them when they won the local amateur league and lifted all the prizes in one year without . That was about ten years ago and only five years ago he gave up training the team because of ill health.

Mr McCall worked with the Caledonian company (now Western SMT) at their Eastfield Road premises.

He is survived by his wife, son and married daughter. His son arrived at Prestwick yesterday from Canada, where he has been for 11 years to attend the funeral."

QUESTION Phil Harrison
You must have answered this question so many times, but where did you get such a wonderful name from?
ANSWER
The town of Dumfries got its name Queen of the South from David Dunbar a local poet who back in 1857 stood for the General Election. In one of his addresses he called Dumfries "Queen of the South" and it became synonymous with the town. The local team Wanderers took up the name but they went defunct around 1900. The present Queens were formed in 1919 and after a vote Queen of the South was picked from amongst others:-

Dumfries United, Southern Wanderers, Vale of Nith etc.

This info is in the great wee book available at Thins, Smiths, Palmerston, the Shop section of this site and the Ewart Library - QOS - "through the lens" - price only £2.50.

I WAS INFORMED AT THE ABERDEEN GAME THAT QUEENS WERE THE LAST TEAM TO PLAY THIRD LANARK AT CATHKIN PARK IN A LEAGUE FIXTURE.

CAN YOU TELL ME WHICH DIVISION THIS WAS IN, THE DATE OF THE MATCH AND THE SCORELINE & SCORERS ?
ANSWER
The game between Third Lanark and Queens was played at Cathkin Park on 25th April 1967, it ended in a 3-3 draw and was the second last fixture that Third Lanark played in the old Second Division that season.

Jimmy Davidson scored one for Queens and Brian McMurdo two, including the last ever goal at the Park.

In Third Lanarks' final match the scorer of their last ever goal was Drew Busby, who of course went on to manage Queens for a couple of seasons.

QUESTION Jonathan Blain
I am a Queens follower (with a Spurs season ticket) living in Hertfordshire, and whilst scrolling through the Internet Fan Club noticed three supporters lving within 10 miles of me. Nick Boyes (0684), John Mitchell (1042) and Chris Connor (1094) are all local to myself (membership no. 0177). I was just wondering whether there were e-mail addresses of these fans so I could contact them.
ANSWER
Many people have recognised someone on the list and asked us for their email address, unfortunately we cannot provide these details directly due to the Data Protection Act, what we recommend is that you use the Message Board and leave a message with your own email address and ask if any of the fans that you want to contact read it that they mail you directly.

It is unfortunate as when we started the internet fan club we did run with email addresses next to the names for the first hundred or so but is was soon pointed out to us that we shouldn't be divulging such information.
QUESTION Simon Clark
I Believe my Grandfather Played for Queen of the South, could you please help me out ? His name was Arthur Clark, and he came from kirkbright, and possibly played before 1939
ANSWER
Sorry Simon, we can't find any trace of any one called Arthur Clark having made any first team appearances before 1939, the closest we have is a W Clark who came from Arthurlie and played in seasons 1929 to 32.

It may be that he turned out for our reserve side as no records exist for the reserve teams of that era.
