MATCH SUMMARY

A determined but unlucky Brechin side just about reversed a 2-0 Queens lead today as a lethargic Doonhamers side struggled all afternoon to find any real desire to win the match. There was only one change to the starting line up from last weekend at Inverness as Stephen Payne dropped to the bench with Alex Burke coming on to play up front with Emilio Jaconelli. Willie Gibson dropping into the left sided midfield role vacated by Payne. The bench had a number of changes as Sean O'Connor came through the warm up okay this weekend, Paul McMullan returned after missing out last week, and youngster Richard Maxwell made his first ever sixteen although did not get a run-out. The game itself was not a classic by any stretch of the imagination, in fact neither side produced anything of note until the fifteenth minute when an Eric Paton free-kick on the right hand side was nodded into the back of the net by Emilio Jaconelli and received a great response from the crowd as he has been so unlucky and so close in recent weeks to netting his first strike for Queens. Ten minutes further on and a chance fell to Paul Burns on the edge of the box, the wirey winger stepped inside and shot at goal with what looked like a goalbound effort only to see it strike a defender solidly and bounce away. Brechin were immediately up the other end as Paul Deas struck an effort low and hard towards goals, this time the ball struck his own player, Templeman, and deflected just wide with the offside flag up in any case. The last ten minutes of the half belonged to Brechin and their best effort needed a superb one handed flying save from Samson to defy them an equaliser from the head of Templeman. The second half started with a bang as Alex Burke was picked out on the edge of the box by Paton, the Dingwall bound striker composed himself and slotted the ball through the legs of Budinauckas to make the score 2-0 and Queens looking likely to take all three points. Emilio Jaconelli had the chance to make it three within another minute as he broke free down the right but struck his effort wide of the upright. That was his last effort of the game as he was replaced shortly after due to an injury that he had picked up.

Fifteen minutes into the half and a second substitute came on with Sean O'Connor taking the place of Paul Burns and Willie Gibson swapping to the right wing to give Paul McMullan a free-run up the left with Sean partnering Alex Burke in the middle. Maybe it was the changes but certainly the defence were getting put under more pressure by the visitors and a goal was their reward as the ball came across from the right and found Craig Winter who easily tapped home to give Brechin some hope. John Connolly made his final change with Stephen Payne coming on for Willie Gibson with fifteen minutes to go but at this stage Brechin were in the ascendancy and pressing for an equaliser. It almost came when Andy Dowie beat the defence and with Samson expecting a cut-back had a shot at the near post which the keeper did well to get back to and push around the post. The inevitable was only delayed a couple of minutes though and it was almost a carbon copy of the first as the ball again came in from the right and this time it was substitute Gibson who had the easiest of tasks to stroke the ball past Samson to the delight of the twenty-five Brechin fans who had made the long trip. Brechin were the stronger side as time was played out and Charlie King's inability to remain on his feet was the only thing that prevented him breaking through the defence with a clean sight of goal whilst a couple of other chances may well have capped a remarkable fight back from the visitors. In summary no one could have complained if Brechin had won the match, for long spells they were a team that wanted to win more than the home side did. Click here to see the Alex Burke goal.
