MATCH SUMMARY
Carlisle United had a comfortable victory tonight despite what the score line would suggest - the 2-1 margin served to flatter Queens who seemed taken aback by the speed, strength and organisation of the Cumbrians. Hopefully the game will have served as a 'wake-up-call' for the Dumfries men.

The home side lined up with holiday returnee Jim Thomson immediately restored to the centre of the defence and club captain Steve Bowey returning from injury coming back into the heart of the midfield. Willie Gibson was given a starting role on the left with Brian McLaughlin having to sit on the bench for sixty minutes.

Carlisle started at full speed and immediately put the home side on the back foot - so much so that the ball was in the back of the net in the first minute for what looked a good goal only for the assistant referee to rule it out as the marksman was in an offside position. It was only a short reprieve though as four minutes later Jim Thomson gifted the ball to Nade who then setup Karl Hawley with a simple tap in to open the scoring. It looked ominous for Queens as the Cumbrians had the game firmly in their control with Queens being closed down with no time on the ball given by their opponents.

Barnard is beaten by Hawley
Flying winger Brendan McGill broke down the right hand side past Tommy English on fifteen minutes and sent a deep cross to the back post where Hawley had his effort blocked by the feet of Richie Barnard.

Queens were not really in the game but did have a good chance as Steve Bowey broke through the middle of the park and sent in a dipping effort from the edge of the box that Williams in the Carlisle goal did well to tip over.

Just after the half-hour mark it was 2-0 to the visitors, this time a corner from the left was not cleared as Murray and Thomson challenged, the ball fell to Kevin Gray who hammered it home through a ruck of players from twelve yards. And three minutes later a Jim Thomson fresh air slice at the ball was fortunate to find Richie Barnard immediately in its line as the defence looked at its shakiest this pre-season. The first half ended and you could say that we were never really in it.

Thomson and Nade challenge
The second half started with no changes to the home line up but after only five minutes Jim Thomson was replaced by Gary Wood and throughout the half changes were made by both sides that effectively broke the match rhythm up. Indeed it was only in the last ten minutes of the game that Queens looked like they were going to do anything - other than Gary Wood picking up what is an extremely rare item - a yellow card in a friendly - for scything down McGill on the half way line.

With eight minutes to go Stephen Payne woke the home support up as he curled an unstoppable free kick into the goalkeepers top left corner from around twenty two yards out - such was the quality of the strike that the Carlisle fans joined in the applause.

Then in the final minute a David McNiven/Brian McLaughlin combination almost sneaked an equaliser as both had great efforts very well saved by Williams.

McNiven's effort was blocked by the 'keeper
The game was extremely disappointing for the expectant Queens fans as the gap in class between the sides was clear to see - however we will not meet many teams of Carlisle's quality in our league.
