MATCH SUMMARY
Queens reverted to a more conventional 4-4-2 formation today for the visit of Airdrie United to Palmerston. In came Derek Lyle to partner Emilio Jaconelli up front and Tommy English to replace David Craig at left-back. Paul Burns dropped onto the bench to allow Lyle to take his place up front but there was still no sign of Colin Scott who has not yet fully recovered from his leg injury. On the bench were McNiven, Craig, Burns, Payne and 'keeper Wright with Gibson and Williams missing completely.

It was a lively start to the game with an opening for Airdrie almost from the kick off as Alan Gow sent a cross straight along the edge of the six yard box with no takers, however the ball then broke upfield and Emilio Jaconelli fed Derek Lyle wide right who lifted the ball over the defence and into the path of Steve Bowey, Bowser though was caught by Marvyn Wilson who did enough to force the ball past the post.

Bowser is foiled as he homes in on goal
The game was bogged down in a midfield tussle with neither side making much in the way of chances, Alan Gow demonstrated on a few occasions why he is so highly rated as he gave Gary Wood a torrid time down the left and Jerome Veraille had the best effort of the half for the visitors as he blasted an effort that was set up by Gow over the bar from 25 yards. As for Queens they were playing nice enough passing football but not creating much in the way of chances at all, Steve Bowey getting the best chances as he attempted to burst through from midfield a couple of times.

The second half of the match didn't improve too much with a similar pattern to that seen in the first. The first couple of minutes saw a decent effort from Eric Paton fly over the top from the edge of the box.

15 minutes into the half and Iain Scott made a change as Paul Burns came on for Brian McLaughlin with the entire midfield moving across by one position to allow Burnsy to take up his familiar right sided role. Shortly after David McNiven was brought on for the subdued Derek Lyle who was still suffering from his recent illness.

Gary Wood produced a great block as he managed to get his foot in the way of a goal bound effort from Owen Coyle, then Queens best effort of the game as Jim Thomson fired a superb low shot from twenty five yards that had goal written all over it until former Stranraer 'keeper Mark McGeown managed to put in a superb block to disappoint the big defender.

Airdrie were dominating possession and the visiting fans clearly thought that they should have had a penalty as Owen Coyle ended up on the ground in a tussle with Gary Wood, however Willie Young was very close at hand, could see nothing wrong and waved play on.

On the stroke of full time Bowey and McNiven combined to good effect down the left but the result was disappointing as Bowser blasted wildly past. A goal for either side though would have been very cruel on the other side as neither deserved the win.
